If you’re wondering what boots do I need to buy this winter, there were three main trends that stood out on the runways, and they’re sure to stick around throughout 2025 and beyond: over-the-knee lengths, equestrian-inspired designs, and tough biker boots.

While each one of those styles are certainly having a moment on the catwalk, they also are practical enough to incorporate into our everyday lives. I always look for boots that are functional with a nod to the season’s trend as they tend to be worthy investments. This year, I’m looking for something that will last for several seasons and stand up to the elements we face in the Northeast—like heavy snow and the salt that inevitably follows any winter storm.

I found a few styles that check all of those boxes and added them below. What’s even better? Each one of these boot trends works with skirts, jeans and dresses. See exactly what I discovered on the runways and inside the stores ahead.

Equestrian Dreams

Sabato de Sarno of Gucci ignited a desire for the perfect riding boot in his 2nd collection for Gucci back in February during Milan fashion week. They were offered in rich Ancora red as well as olive green and black. Even if they’re not Gucci, equestrian boots should be a staple in everyone’s fashion arsenal. They bring an instant polish to a pair of jeans, a long flowy dress, or a miniskirt paired with opaque tights. They are also generally flat, making them a go-to choice for a day of walking around. Here are my picks for fall:

    Over-The-Knee Opulence

The most coveted boot in Paris was Chemena Kamali’s over the knee studded boots. The proportion and the heel height was perfection with the boho vibe that walked that runway. Everyone wants to be that effortlessly cool girl.

If a heel is not for you, there were plenty of flat options to go around as well, especially the ones by Fendi and Dior. Whether a flat or a stiletto, you are sure to feel confident and pulled together when putting on a pair this winter.

    Hello, Moto

When Hermès does a biker boot, the brand brings the chicest elements into this tough-girl style. We saw knee-high ones on the runway, but there are plenty of ankle height versions to go around. The zippers, rounded toe box, and lug soles are always my go-to for fall and winter. Perfect for a day at a farm or a walk down 5th Avenue, moto boots are a versatile hero. Adding luxurious craftsmanship to these classic boots definitely levels up your look.
