Turns out Kaia Gerber’s role in Saturday Night and Austin Butler’s appearance in Dune: Part Two, which received a Best Motion Picture – Drama nomination, weren’t enough to bring the actors out to the Golden Globes this evening.
Although Gerber has a small role in Saturday Night, the film only received one nomination: Best Performance by a Male Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Gabriel LaBelle’s work playing Lorne Michaels, so her absence is understandable. Butler also had no individual nods, as Dune: Part Two only received two nominations: Best Drama Picture and Best Original Score – Motion Picture.
Gerber and Butler have kept their relationship private for the most part. They have never done a red carpet together—so it’s no surprise the Golden Globes is not their first. Their last sighting together was in October 2024.
In November, Gerber spoke to Vogue about her acting career and how much she enjoys getting to spend time with characters who are different from her, be it in books or on-screen.
“I’ve always been quite mild-tempered,” she said. “My family called me the easy one. I didn’t need anything. And I kind of prided myself on not having big feelings.”
Some of the characters she plays serve as “a reminder that you can have these feelings…. I didn’t always feel like there was space for it, to be honest,” she admitted. “I was always so aware of how privileged I grew up…. Everything that happened to me, I thought, But there’s so much worse happening to other people. And that perspective, while good to have, can also be damaging if you don’t take your own pain seriously.”
Accordingly, Gerber works with a movement coach on projects. “It’s about being in your body,” she said. “You do a lot of repetitive movements to fatigue the parts that are second nature. It’s all about getting—acting—closer to the bone. I’ve really learned about where we store our trauma.”
