Things To Do In London This Weekend: June 28 -30

It’s fair to say that, with his series of Wax Da Jam parties at XOYO, Nightmares on Wax has been spoiling us. Marking the 10-year anniversary of his fabled Ibiza night, he's so far recruited the likes of Crazy P, Norman Jay and Maurice Fulton to the party cause. But this Saturday is the big finale and the one not to be missed, as Mr Wax himself takes charge of proceedings. And he’s going in hard, with a celebratory, genre-crossing set lasting – as the name of this night would suggest – all night long. Expect eclectic beats, big smiles and a whole lot of shapes to be thrown. YES.

Are there three sweeter letters in the English language than B, B and Q? We think not. Especially when it’s a BBQ created by pop-up supremo Jimmy Garcia, who returns to the Southbank once again after a sell-out summer last year. Not that he’ll be doing all the work, mind you – each table in his rooftop restaurant garden comes equipped with a built-in barbie, on which you’ll get to cook a part of each of the six dishes on the tasting menu. Expect the likes of whisky-smoked sea trout with caper and raisin vinaigrette; or lamb cutlets and ribs with salsa rojo, charred baby gem, and crispy chorizo… Which can all be summed up in another sweet three-letter word: Y-U-M.

Not heard of feminist punk-rock wrestling? Where have you been? If you head down to Bethnal Green this Sunday you can see some seriously fearsome women in action at Europe’s largest ever wresting event, Wrestle Queendom II. Organised by promoter, activist and Pro-wrestling matriarch, Emily Read, and husband Dann (who campaign for increased acceptance of women in professional wrestling), the event takes place in York Hall, which usually sees the likes of Lennox Lewis and Ricky Hatton knocking people senseless. Emily credits wrestling with getting her over serious mental health problems, and wants to encourage more girls and women to take up the sport. Names to watch in the ring are Rhia O’Reilly (head coach at EVE Academy -London’s School of Women’s Wrestling), Erin Angel, Jetta, Yuu and Nightshade. And you will definitely want to be in their gang .

Hackney, one could argue, has been a vegan village for a fair while now (seriously, there are more veggie cafes there than you can shake a seitan burger at) – but this weekend, it becomes so in a much more official capacity. Taking over Bohemia Place, 50 independent traders will be filling trestle tables with all manner of plant-based tastiness – with everything from stacked burgers and loaded fries to raw, healthy wraps and summer salads. Plus, there’ll be kombucha and cold-pressed juice, reusable toiletries, sustainable clothing, eco-jewellery… and very probably a fair few mentalists. After all, these people are livin’ on the veg.

Here’s the dirt on DIRT: it’s Berber & Q’s frankly splendid series of wine-tastings with a twist. Which is that at each event sommeliers go head to head to select their favourite bottles, from the well-known to the downright obscure – and the winner is whosever bins are emptied first. And this Sunday it’s back, for one night only, and in a new home at that. Head to Naughty Piglets in Brixton, where owner Margaux Aubry Sharratt, Berber & Q's Mattia Bianchi and Emily Campeau, wine buyer at Restaurant Candide in Montreal, try to tempt us with sparkling wines from around the world. Which, let’s face it, won’t be hard. No need to fight, guys: we’re happy to drink ALL the wine.

Sound the heatwave klaxon! This weekend is set to be the hottest of the year so far, and we don’t know about you, but when the sun comes out there’s only one thing we want to be doing: dancing in a field. And this Sunday, Finsbury Park is set to oblige. Back for 2019 is Community festival, an indie-tastic one-dayer that sees The Kooks, Blossoms, Don Broco and the Amazons supply the sounds, the sun providing the rays – and you? You just need to bring the dance moves, friends.
