Following the unparalleled success of that viral New Yorker essay by author Kristen Roupenian in December 2017, the A24-produced film adaptation of Cat Person finally has a trailer to accompany it.

The film, which debuted at Sundance Film Festival in January to rapturous applause, is adapted from the essay, which tells the story of the short-lived relationship between 20-year-old college sophomore Margot (played by CODA's Emilia Jones) and the 34-year-old Robert (Succession's Nicholas Braun). The film's story told from the perspective of both characters and is intended to be an interrogation of the minefield of modern dating.

The film’s director Susanna Fogel, the woman behind The Flight Attendant, told Variety: 'Using Kristen’s excruciatingly well-observed short story about the horrors of dating as the jumping off point for an actual genre film, Cat Person will explore the hellscape of modern romance and the idea that we have all been the villain in someone else’s story, and the victim in others.' Alongside the trailer announcement comes a release date of 6 October.

Cat Person became The New Yorker's most-read short story of 2017. Published in the wake of the Harvey Weinstein scandal and the #MeToo campaign, the story furthered the conversation about sexual harassment and gender roles, raising some important questions about consent.

Following Cat Person's success, Roupenian signed a seven-figure book deal for her debut collection of short stories, You Know You Want This, which was released in 2019.
