Yet, the Royal Box wasn’t always the velvet-roped playground for royals, A-listers, and the 'who’s that again?' crowd. Its origins are as practical as they are proper: when the All England Club moved to Church Road in 1922, the Royal Box was installed to give the monarchy and their friends a front-row seat to the world’s most genteel sporting drama. Before that Royals wanting to attend the tennis tournament in SW19 had to slum it in a makeshift Committee Box.
Today, the Box’s 74 seats are so exclusive that they are strictly invitation-only and the Box has hosted everyone from Queen Elizabeth II to David Beckham and Sir David Attenborough. So, as the world’s eyes turn to Centre Court, remember: the real spectacle isn’t always on the grass. Sometimes, it’s sipping Pimm’s just above it.
