Before the release of the series, Pompeo shared some important lessons she learned while filming Good American Family, particularly on how the character she portrayed taught her about the potential harm that parenting can sometimes inflict on a child.

'I'm more aware now of how much damage you can do to a child by your either action or inaction, and how reactive you are,' Pompeo recently revealed to reporters during a press conference. 'And a lot of parenting is about ego. And this is a reflection of us, or so we want it to be. And how do you respond when you don't get the reaction you want, or you don't get the response you want? Playing this character has made me more mindful of that.'

As for how she brought this to her portrayal, the actor turned to 'a mother's love,' when looking for inspiration. 'The place I started from creating this character was a mother's love. I think every mother has the intention to love their children and do whatever it takes to get their children the love, the support, the help they need.'

Continuing, she discussed how she came to understand her character's intention: 'Sometimes we take on too much and sometimes we make really bad choices. But I think at the core, mothers have ... the best intentions. And that's where I started from, is that every mother loves their children.'
