Netflix’s Top Boy's fifth — and final — series has finally been given a release date. The streaming service has announced that the acclaimed drama series about life on fictional London estate Summerhouse will be available to stream from 7 September 2023.

Netflix confirmed that the series, which is executively produced by two of its protagonists Ashley Walters and Kane 'Kano' Robinson, would receive a fifth season on March 31, 2022 shortly after its fourth instalment debuted.

The season will be the third produced by Netflix and is branded as 'season three' on the streaming service. Filming began for its final season last summer and avoided being hit by the Covid restrictions that had affected the filming of the previous series.

Top Boy will return for its final season in September 2023.

While at the end of the last series, viewers were left on a serious cliffhanger, Walters and Robinson confirmed that the upcoming final season will 'end the journey in the right way.'

In a joint statement, the actors said: 'For those that have followed the journey from the start, you will know how much this show means to everyone on our team and we wholeheartedly know how much it means to you. These characters have been a part of our lives for over a decade now and without everyone’s support we couldn’t have come this far.'

They continued: 'Whilst the journeys of Dushane and Sully have remained at the core of the show, the new characters that have entered the world of Top Boy have become a key part of the show’s legacy, representing each new storyline in a raw, authentic way.

When will Top Boy season 5 be released?

Netflix has finally revealed that the final season of Top Boy will be available to stream on the platform from September 7, 2023. The streaming service has also released a trailer for the final season, which looks tense to say the least.

Who will star in Top Boy season 5?

Walters and Kano are set to reprise their roles as protagonists Dushane and Sully, and so too is Little Simz, who is making a return as Dushane’s partner Shelley. Jasmine Jobson is also set to return as Jaq, Araloyin Oshunremi as Stefan, and Saffron Hocking as Lauryn. Other cast members also likely to feature in the final season are Hope Ikpoku Jr as Aaron, Lisa Dwan as Lizzie, Adwoa Aboah as Becks, Theo Ogundipe as Ruben, Erin Kellyman as Pebbles, and Ava Brennan as Vee.

In July, it was announced that The Banshees of Inisherin star, and BAFTA winner, Barry Keoghan and Peaky Blinders’ Brian Gleeson are joining the cast as newcomers, Jonny and Tadgh respectively, though the nature of those roles is yet to be confirmed.

What is the plot of Top Boy season 5?

The end of last season left a lot of questions unanswered. After Sully’s murder of Jamie (gulp), who Dushane had pinned his retirement hopes on, it remains to be seen what will happen to Sully and Dushane’s once-buried hatchet. Dushane isn’t the only one Sully should be worrying about in the fifth season — Jamie’s brothers Stef and Aaron may also be out for blood, having lost their beloved brother and breadwinner.

There’s also the subject of Liverpool-based gangster Curtis, who was killed in season four, but whose gang very much remained alive and kicking. Sully might have warned them not to return to London, but they may well be on a path of revenge, hunting down Curtis’ pregnant ex Lauryn and her sister Jaq. Speaking to Digital Spy, Hocking, who plays Lauryn, said of her hopes for the new season: ‘I’d like to imagine for Lauryn, and hope that the birth of her child and everything she’s fought for to get to this point, will make everything worth it and she’ll be able to find happiness within that.’
