Megan Fox and Machine Gun Kelly got engaged in January, when the rapper proposed to the actor with a unique pear-cut emerald engagement ring that he designed himself with the help of British jewellery-maker Stephen Webster.

Kelly has since revealed that he and Fox were previously in a 'dangerous place' in their relationship.

During a chat with Howard Stern on Wednesday morning, Kelly opened up about his and Fox's union, which he referred to as his 'first true intense relationship'.

The 31-year-old musician said that his '5150' song for newly released album Sellout includes dark lyrics inspired by his concerns that he and Fox were in a 'dark place' in the early stages of their relationship.

'Leave, leave me now and 'please, please, save yourself' are some of the lyrics in the song.

The 'Fake love don't last' artist said: 'At the time, yeah, I think we were in a dangerous place… what led us to search for healing in ways of, like, the plant medicine, ayahuasca.'

Due to some of his lyrics, Stern asked him if he had a 'death wish', referencing the song 'Sid & Nancy'. Of this, Kelly said: 'That was actually a text that Megan had sent me, it was something along the lines of "if we have to live a life where we have to see each other with different people then we should just go out murder/suicide."'

Included in the track is a line that reads: 'Cut my chest, gave you my heart and soul.'

Despite his 'very romantic' intentions with his choice of lyrics, Kelly highlighted that they were exaggerated for drama and not meant to be taken literally.

When previously speaking to GQ, Fox described her and Kelly's relationship as 'tense'.

Giving his take on their relationship, Kelly echoed his fiancé when saying: 'It’s ecstasy and agony for sure... I don’t want people to think anything’s perfect with us. I didn’t say it was the darkest fairy tale for no reason.

'There’s also the demonic side.'

The mother-of-three also told the publication: 'It was obvious from second one what it was going to be, but we didn’t hook up right away.’

The couple, who have matching tattoos that spell out 'the darkest fairytale', shared sweet sentiments about each other when announcing their engagement.

Kelly shared a video clip to his Instagram feed Fox showing off her ring, along with a caption that began: 'Yes, in this life and every life.'

He continued: 'Beneath the same branches we fell in love under, I brought her back to ask her to marry me. I know tradition is one ring, but i designed it with Stephen Webster to be two: the emerald (her birth stone) and the diamond (my birth stone) set on two magnetic bands of thorns that draw together as two halves of the same soul forming the obscure heart that is our love.'

As for Fox, she, too, shared a heartfelt message to accompany footage that showed Kelly proposing to her.

Of the proposal that's believed to have taken place at Spa Botánico at the Ritz-Carlton Dorado Beach during the couple's stay in Puerto Rico, she wrote: 'In July of 2020 we sat under this banyan tree. We asked for magic. We were oblivious to the pain we would face together in such a short, frenetic period of time.

'Unaware of the work and sacrifices the relationship would require from us but intoxicated off of the love. And the karma.

She concluded with an off-key remark, writing: '…and then we drank each other’s blood'.
