What was the plot of the first 1959 remake of the Imitation Of Life?

Imitation of Life, directed by Douglas Sirk, explores race, identity, gender and motherhood in American life.

The story, set in 1948, introduces two widowed mothers, aspiring actor Lora Meredith (Lana Turner)– who is white –, and deprived, homeless and unemployed Annie Johnson (Juanita Moore), who is black.

They are the mothers of young daughters and meet at Coney Island, before the Johnsons move in with the Merediths. Thereafter, Annie looks after the house while Lora auditions for roles.
