ICYMI, this month the Duchess of Cambridge wowed us all with a piano recital at a Christmas concert in Westminster Abbey, and what a wonderful moment it was. But, while Kate looked as glamorous as ever for the event, which saw her take to the stage for a musical performance, according to some reports she broke royal protocol by doing so.
As per OK!, Kate's piano recital broke royal protocol – most likely because it goes against what we should expect to traditionally see from members of 'The Firm' – but that's not all it broke. In fact, her performance also broke royal records on Instagram too, with a clip of the moment becoming the most viewed royal video to date, racking up over 11 million views on the Cambridges' Instagram account. Impressive.
Despite the rules she may have broken, royal fans headed to the comments section to share their appreciation for Kate's musical talents. "That was so beautiful Catherine ❤️ a perfect performance," said one happy fan, with another commenting: "So talented in so many ways!!!"

But, Kate's not the only royal who has broken protocol over the Christmas holidays. As we all know, the Royal Family usually spend the big day with the Queen at her Sandringham Estate. That's not to say that every royal immediately finds themselves on the invite list to the Her Majesty's Christmas celebrations though, especially those who haven't officially married into the family yet.
Luckily however, some royal partners found themselves able to skip the festive FOMO altogether, earning themselves an exclusive invite to Sandringham before they'd officially said 'I do.' Back in 2017, Meghan Markle surprised royal fans when she made an appearance at the Sandringham Estate on Christmas Day – five months before she and Prince Harry got married.
Similarly, Princess Beatrice's now-husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi joined the festivities in 2019. He was due to marry Beatrice just a few months later, in May 2020, however this was postponed in July due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
This year however, the Christmas invite list at Sandringham looked a little different, with the Queen scrapping her plans to spend Christmas there due to the increasing number of Omicron cases spreading across the UK. Instead, she stayed at her home in Windsor Castle and enjoyed a video call from the Cambridges, who celebrated at Anmer Hall in Norfolk. Meghan and Prince Harry meanwhile remained over the pond at their home in California with their two children, Archie and Lilibet.
