Katie Holmes has opened up about her bond with Suri Cruise and her daughter's budding personality in rare public comments.
The Dawson's Creek star welcomed her daughter in 2006, six months before she married Suri's father Tom Cruise. In the early years of her life, Holmes, Tom and Suri were the subject of intense interest and speculation from the media, but since the couple's 2011 divorce, Holmes has largely shielded her daughter from public life.
Now, 14 years old, Holmes gave an insight into her teenage daughter's personality to InStyle:

'I love her so much. My biggest goal has always been to nurture her into her individuality. To make sure she is 100 percent herself and strong, confident, and able. And to know it. She came out very strong — she's always been a strong personality. She'll pick an activity and work her butt off until she's really good at it. Then she's like, "OK, I'm going to try the next thing." She's very focused and a hard worker.'
Holmes also opened up a on the intrusion she and Suri were subject too in the first few years of her life and how it impacted her.
'I did recently see some fan site [about her] posted when she was a baby,' Holmes said. 'And it was very intense. We were followed a lot when she was little. I just wanted her outside, so I would walk her around to find parks at 6 in the morning when nobody would see us. But there's one video where I'm holding her — she was 2 at the time — and she starts waving at the cameras. She's pretty special.'
Holmes described moving to New York City in 2012 after her divorce from Cruise as a very 'intense' time.
'It was a lot of attention and I had a little child on top of it,' she says.
Last year, Holmes discussed becoming a mum at 27 years-old, when she graced ELLE's December 2019 cover, adding that she and Suri 'kind of grew up together'.
'I was happy to become a mum in my twenties... It’s been nice that our ages fit… how do I put this? Every age that my child has been and my age at that time has been a good match. We kind of grew up together.'
