How To Shop The 'Stealth Wealth' Fashion From ‘Succession’ Season 4

The Roys' vast wealth may be wildly unattainable, but their fashion doesn't have to be...

By
succession fashion

With their questionable morals, cut-throat business style, back-stabbing tendencies and fervent hunger for power, there isn’t much about Succession’s Roy family that we’re keen to emulate. Watching their drama unfold and revelling in the sheer genius of Jesse Armstrong’s darkly comic script is one thing – but to actually be the Roys? Not quite so tempting… (Though having even a fraction of their money would, admittedly, be nice.)

The only thing about the Roys that we are envious of, however, is their wardrobes. In fact, ever since season four of Succession premiered last month, we’ve found ourselves in the throes of a full-blown obsession – and the rest of the world has followed suit. Entire Instagrams dedicated to Succession style have popped up and gained tens of thousands of followers overnight, ‘ludicrously capacious bags’ have been selling like hotcakes, and Naomi Pierce has become the style icon du jour thanks to her ultra-chic monochromatic look and fabulous new Princess Diana-esque hairstyle. And that was only episode one.

Unlike the bold, Instagram-friendly and ‘it bag-centric’ style choices of our previous small-screen fashion icons – from SATC’s Carrie Bradshaw and Gossip Girl’s Serena Van Der Woodsen to Killing Eve’s Villanelle and practically the whole cast of Euphoria – the Succession aesthetic is all about quality, simplicity and discretion. It’s the apotheosis of the ‘quiet luxury’ trend that has dominated the catwalks of late, where loud branding has been replaced with new-age minimalism and neutrals, and the emphasis is on timeless investment pieces. In short: the opposite of ostentation, and an accurate reflection of how the ultra-wealthy really dress.

Because when you’re in the 0.00000001%, you’d actually much rather fly under the radar than attract too much attention (despite arriving in a helicopter) – and when you can afford to buy absolutely anything, you don’t want to be dressed in the same ‘trendy’ pieces that almost any influencer nowadays can get their hands on.

Instead, it’s about far more low-key, 'stealth wealth' signifiers that are only identifiable by fellow gazillionaires: particularly rare (but not flashy) watches, bespoke Savile Row tailoring, specially made sunglasses, the finest cashmeres from Brunello Cucinelli and Loro Piana, everyday diamond studs, consistently perfect (and infuriatingly shiny) hair… And, of course, never needing to drag around a bag big enough to be deemed ‘ludicrously capacious’.

The resulting looks are polished, comfortable, effortless and often rather unremarkable – despite retailing in the tens of thousands. Naturally, the fact that actually dressing in this way on the daily is so wildly expensive serves only to heighten its appeal. In an age of widespread exhibitionism, Instagram-fuelled peacocking, designer-branded everything and heightened access (hello, rental sites!), it’s little wonder we’re so fascinated by a style that is so fundamentally unattainable. That’s not to say we won’t be making every effort to copy it, though…

Here, we break down the genius behind every Succession season four fashion look so far – and reveal where you can actually shop it. Bank balances, we apologise in advance:

Episode 1, Naomi Pierce

HBO

The breakout style star of season four so far, Naomi Pierce's epic monochromatic look in episode one is already the stuff of 'quiet luxury' legend. As she stepped breezily out of her family's sprawling Californian estate, the heiress stole our hearts in a Proenza Schouler knit tank that was expertly tucked into a pair of wide-leg white trousers by the same brand.

And to finish the look? A pair of oversized black sunnies by Tom Ford (logo-less, naturally), pearl drop earrings by Sophie Buhai and a new mullet hairstyle that oozes Princess Diana with a modern twist (and an incredibly expensive hairstylist). Understated chic at its very finest.

Episode 1, Shiv Roy

Home Box Office//Sky

Shiv spent the entirety of Succession season four episode one in a tonal brown slouchy-tailored look, and while it's not the most inspiring of fashion choices, it is 'stealth wealth' all over.

For with the fate of Waystar Royco in her hands, Shiv's mind is on higher things than worrying about putting together some epic outfit – but having all the most beautifully cut, high-quality clothes in the world at her disposal means she manages to look chic with absolutely no effort nonetheless.

Her look consisted of a slightly oversized blazer and drawstring silk wide-leg trousers, both of which are MaxMara and long since sold out, plus black court heels, sizeable (but not shouty) diamond studs and a stylish Hereu tote bag. It's the epitome of off-duty world dominator, with a high-end private shopper on speed dial.

Episode 1, Bridget 'Randomf**k'

Home Box Office//Sky

Greg's date was ill-fated from the start, if her outfit is anything to go by (and in this world, it very much is). Bridget 'Randomf**k', as Tom so delicately named her, made a glaring faux pas when she attended Logan's party in a loud and logo-ed ensemble that reeked of nouveau riche – as far as the Roys were concerned, at least.

In the world of serious wealth, Bridget's floral, ruffled Sandro dress and bold monogrammed Burberry tote stand out for all the wrong reasons. It's the perfect example of how expensive clothes don't necessarily make you look rich, particularly when it's obvious that you're trying hard to fit in. The biggest tell-tale sign, however? The size of her bag. Because someone truly wealthy travels by chauffeur, helicopter or private jet, meaning they'll never be spotted toting their worldly possessions around themselves.

Episode 1, Nan Pierce

HBO

Nan may not be the most obvious Succession style icon, but she's certainly got the 'ultra-rich woman lounging in her Californian mansion' look down pat. Think easy, breezy, and deceptively expensive: her simple shirt and slacks look by Lafayette 148 retails at well over £1,000.

Episode 1, Kerry Castellabate

Home Box Office//Sky

Logan Roy's assistant/advisor/friend was the only character to wear a bold colour for his birthday bash. Kerry's bright blue Sergio Hudson suit may have been stylish, pricey and bang on trend, but against the rest of the group's 'stealth wealth' neutrals, it made her stick out like a sore thumb – and served to emphasise her 'inferior status'.

Episode 2, Willa Ferreyra

HBO

This relatively recent addition to the 'stealth wealth' world looked right at home in a stylish white two-piece suit for her wedding rehearsal. Willa's elegant silk wrap blazer and matching trousers are by Italian luxury brand Marella, which is owned by classic 'quiet luxury' label MaxMara – and already sold out.

Episode 2, Shiv Roy

Shiv Roy rolled out yet another perfectly tailored suit for episode two, albeit notably smarter this time around. Every bit the impeccably dressed executive, Shiv paired a grey Altuzarra suit with a silk cowl-neck blouse by Lafayette 148, black leather stilettos and gold earrings with a matching bracelet. Understated, expensive, and ready for business.
