This year the Swedish clothing brand is working with the iconic and daring French fashion house Mugler.

'H&M's history of designer collaborations is legendary and pioneering. For nearly two decades, H&M has been democratising high fashion by offering global audiences the change to own special pieces of high-end designer jewellery,' H&M revealed in a short and mysterious press release in February.

The brand's annual collaborations have become something of a major fashion event in recent years, so to help you prepare for your shot at buying a slice of high fashion history at a fraction of the price, here's everything you need to know about the H&M X Mugler collaboration...

The high street and designer collection is now up on the H&M website, and as of this morning (May 11), it will all be available to shop.

In the mean time, we're going to look through the 100-plus-piece-strong collection to decide exactly what we're going to splash our hand-earned cash on. And if you're torn as to which mesh-panelled catsuit or silver-hued piece of jewellery to buy, we've created an ELLE edit to help you decide.

We've opted for what we think are the most expensive-looking and true to Mugler's house style pieces - with our favourites being the leather trench (a key trend for AW23) and that epic 'M' logo belt.

How do I shop the H&M X Mugler collection?

The collection is available online at hm.com and in selected stores.

From past collaborations we know huge queues can form outside the physical stores on the day collections 'drop', so we like to peruse them from the comfort of our own laptop or phone.

H&M typically also releases a first glimpse of its designer collaborations ahead of schedule, so you can prep exactly what you want to shop, instead of panic buying everything in sight.

What will the H&M X Mugler collection be like?

'The Mugler H&M collection, crafted under the direction of Mugler's Creative Director Casey Cadwallader, will encapsulate the unique and vibrant spirit of Mugler,' was the first word received on the collection.

Since then, H&M have unveiled a teaser video showing of many of the collection's designs.

Featuring the likes of Jerry Hall dancing, singing and strutting to an Ashland Mines'-produced cover of Stardust’s 1996 hit ‘Music Sounds Better With You’ by Eartheater, Shygirl, Amaarae and Arca, the music video is a veritable feast of sheer, black and tight bodysuits.

There are flashes of colour to be found amidst the sultry dark pieces: namely a forest green trench coat and splashes of neon bodycon pieces.

Denim complete with black body-shaping panels are also present, as well as plenty of silver hardwear jewellery and accessories, including an epic 'M' belt which is sure to be a sellout.

H&M and Mugler have now released the full look book of the collection, meaning you can work through what's on your wish list with a fine tooth comb.

Our favourites have to be Jerry Hall's velvet mini dress, as well as the leather trench coats and front seam hosiery.

To celebrate the collection, H&M held a catwalk show of their Mugler collection in New York, showing the super tight and sheer collaboration to fashion icons such as Chloë Sevigny, Pamela Anderson and Charlie XCX - who all wore H&M X Mugler pieces for the evening.

The supers came out to strut their stuff for the soon-to-be-sell-out line with Irina Shayk and Paloma Elsesser's powerful walks dominating the catwalks.

Size diversity was apparent both on and off the runway at the party-like event, meaning the collection is sure to be available in extended sizing.

Historically, Mugler designs have a touch of the surreal and theatric – think Cardi B in the archival 1995 'Birth Of Venus' dress at the 2019 Grammys, the car-themed 1989 'Buick' collection, or Kim Kardashian's 2019 'wet-look' Met Gala dress.

More recently, under Cadwallader's Creative Direction, we have seen an embrace of the bodycon, particularly mesh and cut-out catsuits beloved by Dua Lipa, Chloë Sevigny and Kylie Jenner.

Who was Thierry Mugler?

French founder and designer Thierry Mugler (born 1948) launched his eponymous brand in 1973 and quickly gained notoriety for his bold-shouldered, playful designs. Over the next three decades the brand went from strength to strength, and was adored by the likes of Naomi Campbell and Grace Jones, and famously worn by Demi Moore in the 1993 hit Indecent Proposal.

Sadly, he shuttered the ready-to-wear arm of the brand in 2003 and stepped away from fashion, though the company, and his famous perfume, continued on without him.

Mugler himself did, thankfully, return to fashion after working with Beyoncé for the costumes on her 2009 tour 'I Am...World Tour'. In 2019 he worked under the 'House of Mugler' name to create Kim Kardashian's 2019 camp Met Gala look.

Sadly, the designer passed away aged 73 in January 2022, leaving an unforgettable legacy among the fashion industry and beyond.

What other H&M designer collaborations have there been?

Over almost two decades there have been a plethora of H&M designer collaborations, but in recent years our favourites have been with Simone Rocha, Giambattista Valli and TOGA Archives.

Always offering up high-end designs at a much lower price point, the H&M collaborations are a fashion favourite for a reason.

We will continue to update this article as more information comes in.
