What comes to mind when you you think of the word 'athleisure'?

Thanks to the likes of Karlie Kloss, Gigi Hadid and Kendall Jenner, gone are the days when leggings, tracksuit bottoms and trainers were reserved solely for long commutes and the treadmill.

The term 'ready-to-wear' officially has meaning, with the fashion industry finally embracing a gym-to-office aesthetic that is versatile, functional, comfortable and, most important en vogue.

Contrary to ephemeral seasonal trends of 2016, such as knee-rip jeans and fringing, athleisure has become an enduring lifestyle choice, incorporating multipurpose fashion into multi-functional lifestyles, making a change of clothes and a stock pile of shoes under the desk at work (heels, flats, running shoes) nul-en-void.

But, how do you strike the balance between office-suitable fashion and full-on gym bunny?

Like many things in life, mastering the sportswear trend requires moderation. We've rounded up the three ways to style the new athleisure aesthetic:

Elongate with oversized layers

There's a common fear when wearing trainers to work that you'll a) seem unprofessional and b) look like a desperate 'adultolescent' craving to be 'down with the kids'.

Avoid this faux pas and make à la Phobe Philo, pairing athleisure footwear with oversized, smart layers such as shirts, duster coats and roll necks.

'Minimalism and clean lines are key to making athleisure work-appropriate. Don't be afraid of layering long-length pieces with chunky trainers to elongate your figure,' says ELLE's fashion intern James Gwyther.

Pair trainers with wide-leg trousers

Tailored structuring and wide-cut trousers is an essential component when styling the athleisure trend.

'Style flatform trainers like Clarks' Tri Abby with bottom-heavy high-waisted culottes to achieve a smart, urban and androgynous vibe,' says Gwyther.

Invest in poppered flares and knee-length splits for added detail.

Create shape with A-line structures

While athleisure may focus on performance and comfort, it's important not to overlook the creation of the silhouette.

Counterbalance slim-sline structuring on the upper half of the body with A-line button front skirts, midi-skirts and A-line coats.

'Experiment with structure by topping off a loose-fitting trouser with a bomber jacket for further athleisure notes,' advises Gwyther.
