Jean Paul Gaultier Appoints Duran Lantink As Its New Permanent Creative Director

For the first time since Jean Paul Gaultier retired from the runway in 2020, the French house has announced that Dutch designer Duran Lantink will now take the helm. After a steady rotation of temporary creative directors, including Chitose Abe, Glenn Martens, Olivier Rousteing, Haider Ackermann, Julien Dossena, Simone Rocha, Nicolas Di Felice and Ludovic de Saint Sernin, Lantink will lead both couture and ready-to-wear, bringing an end to the rotating model. The designer will present his first ready-to-wear collection during Paris Fashion Week in September, reviving the line that had been dormant since 2014.

Last September, Lantink's efforts were recognised at the 11th edition of the LVMH Prize for Young Fashion Designers, and he was awarded the Karl Lagerfeld Prize. More recently, Donatella Versace and Ib Kamara presented him with the 2025 Woolmark Prize. He has garnered a reputation for this subversive take on fashion, playing with form and proportion to create bulbous forms that stand out on the runway.

His most recent show in Paris in March was one of the most talked-about of this season. The designer opened the show with a woman wearing a man’s chest plate and closed it with a man wearing a woman’s breast plate.

Prada Is Buying Versace

After months of swirling rumours, it was confirmed today that the Italian Prada Group will acquire the Versace label from US company Capri Holdings for €1.25 billion (£1.07 billion). “We are delighted to welcome Versace to the Prada Group and to build a new chapter for a brand with which we share a strong commitment to creativity, craftsmanship and heritage,” Prada Group chairman and executive director Patrizio Bertelli said in a statement. “We aim to continue Versace’s legacy celebrating and re-interpreting its bold and timeless aesthetic; at the same time, we will provide it with a strong platform, reinforced by years of ongoing investments and rooted in longstanding relationships.”

The news comes after Donatella Versace stepped down from her post as chief creative officer last month. Her brother Gianni founded the house in 1978, and was murdered in 1997, where she subsequently took over. Dario Vitale — former design director at Miu Miu — is her successor.

Versace was put up for sale by Capri, which also owns Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo, after the company’s merger with Tapestry, parent company of Coach, Kate Spade and Stuart Weitzman, was blocked by the US Federal Trade Commission in November. Capri — then known as Michael Kors Holdings — acquired Versace in January 2019 for over $2.1 billion (£1.6 billion). The Business Of Fashion has reported that the Prada Group is borrowing an additional €250 million (£215 million) to invest in relaunching Versace, which turned loss-making last year.
