The Power Of Print – Independent Magazines You Need To Know Now
The best of print from up and down the country
Last week, in honour of beloved Soho newsagent Wardour News closing its doors, ELLE, Dazed, gal-dem and Riposte came together in the BASEMENT of The LONDON Edition Hotel to discuss the power of print (with a little help from Koko Kanu to get talking).
Guess what? Print isn't dead. In fact, thanks to social media, we're more aware of the talent housed in independent titles now more than ever — whether those magazines are dedicated to fashion, music or cats (yes, cats. Looking at you, Puss Puss).
Here are the independent magazines you need to know about, and where you can find them up and down the U.K.
Nataal
Nataal magazine celebrates African fashion, spotlighting the best of its music, beauty and art. Their first issue features a stunning portfolio of images of Afro-hair by Cyndia Harvey and Rudi Geyser’s exploration of The Western Cape.

Twin
A hard-backed biannual magazine (book-zine, if you will) that looks at women, art, culture and feminism. You can find it at Provide in Birmingham.
Hot and Cool
Founded by sister of Molly, of Alice Goddard and Theo Sion, Hot and Cool looks at fashion from an unexpected angle — no social media. Goddard and Sion regularly round-up fashion’s best photographers, including Jamie Hawkesworth and Harley Weir.

The Skirt Chronicles
A title founded by women that centres the discussion around, yes you guessed, skirts. It's an inclusive platform that touches on cultural and generational differences without stigma. Everything in the magazine is organised chronologically (unlike Instagram...).

Brick
Brick merges music and lifestyle, spotlighting the best of music's up-and-coming artists.

Clash
With more than a decade in the business, Clash magazine is a hybrid of music, fashion and film. It is a title that discovers the best new and emerging bands before anyone in the music business.

Puss Puss
Launched in 2014, Puss Puss has since featured talent and high profile personalities from around the world such as Chinese artist and activist Ai Weiwei, actress Chloë Sevigny, designer Charlotte Olympia, rapper Tyler, The Creator, iconic fashion editor Grace Coddington photographed by Juergen Teller among many others.

gal-dem
An online platform that has expanded into print, gal-dem represents the majority of women of colour that the mainstream media doesn't shine a light on. They are known for their popular in-house events such as gal-dem Sugar and Self Care Sundays.

Riposte
A long-read magazine for thinking women which has won a gold European Design Award for its minimal aesthetic. Riposte highlights bold women and topics beyond print, with monthly events.

Vestoj
'The journal for sartorial matters', Vestoj is an essay book on style, design and questioning our existence. It is a magazine for those looking for a cerebral take on fashion and culture.

System
An industry favourite, System magazine secures the biggest fashion designers and creatives for an in-depth conversation with repeated interviews over the span of six months — from the likes of Rei Kawakubo to Raf Simons in conversation with Miuccia Prada.

Luncheon
A magazine that takes the format of a restaurant menu on each cover. The content is split into Hors d’ouevre, Main dishes, Classics and Desserts. A sharp contemporary title for those who enjoy oversized magazines with quality paper.

A mostly image based magazine, Noon is focussed on art, fashion and culture. It's an original title that experiments with design, and features original poems alongside images by the industry's leading photographers. It explores fashion through an unglamorous approach.

Pop magazine is for those with a serious love of fashion - they have a no holds barred approach to style with a cerebral take that doesn't take itself too seriously. Long-established and revered, it's also a frontrunner when it comes to featuring new faces and design talent.

Buffalo Zine
Buffalo Zine is the black sheep of the zine world with its hard-back design and unconventional attitude to fashion and imagery. There's no advertising, and they don't care for the traditional seasonal fashion calendar, releasing new issues whenever they want.
