Bella Hadid is no stranger to reviving noughties fashion - aka, the absolute looks that we all wore at the start of the new millennium. The styles we thought died a death long ago (hi, low rise jeans, butterfly clips, and trucker hats) are all making a comeback, and Bella has been leading the charge. She's tried her hand at triple denim, cut-out bodysuits, and corset tops.
But yesterday in New York City, she was photographed wearing a trend we hadn't thought about since 2003. And just for fun, we've got the lol-worthy throwback pics at the bottom of this article to remind us how we did it the first time around.
Bella was papped wearing - and how's this for a memory unlock - a denim midi skirt. And not just any denim midi skirt. A loose, a-line one, in that purposefully dirty-looking, pale denim wash that is unmistakably 00s. This is the denim wash that prompted your dad to say, back in the day, 'Honey if you wanted jeans like that, I could have dragged your old ones around in the mud for you.' *Rolls eyes in teenager.*

Her skirt is trimmed in beige to match her spaghetti strap cami top (also peak noughties), and tied with a knotted cord belt. In fact, all of her accessories feel very of that time. She's got the bohemian stacks of beaded bracelets and necklaces straight out of a surf shop. She's got the tiny, handmade-looking leather shoulder bag that also looks like it could have come from a seaside market stall. Giant gold hoops. Matrix-style sunglasses. It's all going on.
She's put a very Bella spin on the look with her lug-sole flat boots, though, which feel more 2021 than 2001. This is the key takeaway for dressing confidently from past decades: if you don't want to look like you walked out of a costume shop, mix in a more modern trend piece.
Without further ado:
And now, some memory lane pics of celebrities styling the humble denim midi the last time it was A Thing. Enjoy.
And there you have it, a fashion history of the iconic denim midi skirt. What do you think, is this a trend you'll be reviving?
