Since 1997, following the tragic murder of her brother Gianni Versace, Donatella Versace has been the creative force behind the house. As one of the few women at the top and with no formal fashion training, Donatella Versace shaped the beloved brand’s legacy, steeped in bold sensuality and Italian glamour. Under her leadership, Versace remained a global superpower and witnessed some of the most recognisable moments on the red carpet and in contemporary fashion. Donatella will now transition into the role of Chief Brand Ambassador, where she will continue to influence the brand's identity and values while supporting Vitale’s creative direction.

The news comes after a release on Thursday announcing that John D. Idol, the chief executive officer of Capri Holdings, which owns Versace, Michael Kors and Jimmy Choo, called the decision 'part of a thoughtful succession plan'. The change comes as Capri is reportedly, according to the New York Times, considering the sale of Versace after the Federal Trade Commission blocked an attempted merger with Tapestry, the owner of Coach and Kate Spade.
Vitale’s appointment signals a new era for Versace as the brand seeks to balance its nostalgia-rich references with a fresh perspective. His experience at Miu Miu, the frontrunner in the luxury sector at the moment, positions him well to lead Versace into its next chapter. Vitale is expected to debut his first collection for Versace during Milan Fashion Week in September 2025.
Dario Vitale said, 'I am truly honored to join Versace as the Chief Creative Officer and to be a part of this special and powerful fashion luxury House created by Gianni and Donatella. The House of Versace has a unique heritage that has spanned decades and has shaped the history of fashion. I want to express my sincere thank you to Donatella for her trust in me, and for her tireless dedication to the extraordinary brand that Versace is today. It is a privilege to contribute to the future growth of Versace and its global impact through my vision, expertise and dedication.'
With Vitale at the helm and Donatella continuing to serve as the face and spirit of the brand, Versace is ready to enter a new chapter of creativity and, with it, global influence.
