The Best Gel Moisturisers That Absorb Without A Trace
A love letter to water creams and lightweight gels.

As someone who grew up with relentlessly oily and hormonal acne-prone skin (which then swung the pendulum entirely to major dehydration in my mid-twenties), my romance with gel moisturisers has been steadfast for as long as I've been using skincare. My first contact with the weightless hydrators was via my mother's personal beauty collection. I can still recall sifting through the bathroom cupboards for her well disguised Clinique Moisture Surge; I was enamoured by the instant calm it brought my angry, blemished skin without leaving me with the greasy complexion of my far less extravagant, tea tree-soaked routine.
Since then, skincare offerings have come on leaps and bounds and it's easy to find moisturisers that work with every skin texture, type and condition. From non-comedogenic formulas for spotty skin and soothing textures for eczema, to plumping creams for mature skin and specific ingredient-based inventions to target dull or weak complexions (think peptides and vitamin C), the options for hydrating lacklustre complexions are limitless.
However, whether it's preventing every trace of make-up from sliding off my shiny face by midday, or providing quick relief for tight, post-cleanse cheeks, for me there is no single product more effective or effortless to use than a lightweight, ultra-absorbent gel moisturiser – and dermatologists will attest to the benefits, too. Here, see everything you need to know, including the ones that really hit the mark.

What Does A Gel Moisturiser Do?
'Gel moisturisers are lightweight, water-based formulas that absorb quickly into the skin without leaving a greasy residue,' says Consultant Dermatologist, Dr Derrick Phillip. 'They provide hydration by delivering moisture without heavy oils, making them ideal for oily or combination skin types. These types of moisturisers often have a cooling, refreshing feel and are less likely to clog pores, making them great for acne-prone skin.'
What Is The Difference Between A Gel Moisturiser And A Cream Moisturiser?
As anyone who has switched their moisturiser from a traditional cream to a gel will know, the main difference between them lies in their texture and composition.
'Gel moisturisers are water-based and absorb quickly, making them ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. In contrast, cream moisturisers are thicker, contain a balance of oil and water and often include nourishing emollients such as shea butter, providing deeper hydration, which is better suited for dry or sensitive skin types.'
Who Are Gel Moisturisers Best For?
'People with oily, combination, or acne-prone skin will benefit the most from a gel moisturiser, as their lightweight, non-greasy texture hydrates without clogging pores,' says Phillip. 'Those living in hot or humid climates may also prefer gel moisturisers for their cooling, fast-absorbing properties.'
