Make-Up Trends 2024: How To Upgrade Your Everyday Make-Up Routine
How to give your make-up routine an overhaul for the New Year, according to backstage artist Lucy Bridge.
From switching out your age-old lipstick shade to trialling a fresh-off-the-runway new eyeshadow shape, we're all in favour of giving your beauty routine a much-needed spring clean. Changing up your day-to-day make-up look can be as simple as rethinking your blusher placement, or as drastic as braving a fresh high-fashion hue, and with award season and fashion month both in full swing, we're leaving it to the pros to guide us on the best ways to upgrade our make-up routines in 2024.
Heading up the trend carousel is backstage make-up artist Lucy Bridge, who has worked on shows from Conner Ives and Dries Van Noten to Mugler and Kenzo. From plush skin to bold tones, her command of colour has made Bridge an industry-known name; a covetable artist with a flourishing trend-setting portfolio.
'Pamela Anderson has been embracing the natural make-up look and I think this is setting the tone for the year to come,' says Bridge. 'Stripping back the makeup brings a new perspective to makeup, paving the way for a fresher and simpler day to day feel. Leaving the Kardashian heavy foundations in the past and embracing your true skin and feeling confident when doing so.'
The colour trend she's anticipating for 2024? Clashing hues with a bold red lip.'Clashing colours create a fun yet simple look that are easy to recreate at home for everyone,' she says. 'Use one wash of pink tones across the eyes, followed by a bright red lipstick.'
Read on for Lucy Bridge's go-to make-up trends for 2024 aka the looks worth overhauling your beauty routine for.
Power Pouts
The Trend: Bold mattes in bright red hues are this season's statement lip trend; think opaque crimson formulas set with a pigment to create a velvet blurred texture and finish. The inspiration? Mugler SS24.
The Tutorial:
- Prep the lips using a hydrating lip balm, such as 8 Hour Creme by Elizabeth Arden
- Scrub the lips using KIKO Pure Clean Scrub & Peel Wipes
- Use a red lip liner to create the lip shape and fill in the entire lip as a coloured base
- Next use a bright red lipstick (Satin or Matte in texture) and use a lip brush to create the perfect shape
- Lastly using a flat eyeshadow brush (MAC 239S is my favourite) press in a red eyeshadow or loose pigment starting in the centre of the lips and working out slowly to the edge
Soft Spring Cheeks
The Trend: Fresh dewy cheeks are here for SS24. Perfect for lifting and enhancing natural features, these peach and pink flushes have a soft summery feel. The blusher should look like second skin with a soft blurred finish.
The Tutorial:
- Use your fingers and a cream blusher for your cheeks
- Aim for the apples of the cheeks and blend upwards for a lift
- Using your fingers will naturally melt the colour into your cheeks for a fresh and dewy finish
Textile Lashes
The Trend: From Dries Van Noten to Mugler, creating a winged liner with unconventional materials is the most innovative way to update your eye look. Van Noten displayed an array of feather winged eyeliner shapes in a variety of different colours and textures for a simple yet dynamic finish, while Mugler created an elegant and chic eyeliner technique: 3D floating eyeliners which came from the outer corner of the eye.
The Tutorial
- Use a feather of your choice, cut down to size (the smaller ones are more suitable) and use as an eyeliner from the outer corner of the eye
- Attach with lash glue
- Feathers can be used as a whole or they can be pulled apart in create an interesting unique shape
Hyper-real Skin
The Trend: A natural skin texture with added highlighting properties to give you a youthful and natural skin finish. Next year real skin will be a huge trend, stepping away from full
coverage foundations and embracing tinted moisturisers and lightweight foundations.
The Tutorial:
- The key to the no make-up look is good skincare. Cleanse twice morning and night. Make sure to remove all dirt from the day. Use a good quality serum moisturiser and SPF
- Use your fingers to melt a tinted moisturiser into your skin. The heat from your fingers helps blend the product into your skin giving a natural and flawless finish
- Just use concealer under the eyes and on red areas if needed
