In A24’s latest film, Materialists, we meet Dakota Johnson’s character, Lucy, a sharp New York City matchmaker with a knack for finding wealthy suitors for her clients. She pairs her matchmaking instincts with a city-chic style wardrobe—think comfy, pinstripe blazers from Aritzia and Paris Texas boots. Her signature minimalist beauty routine, likely centered around clean-girl beauty brands like Merit and Westman Atelier, includes a perfectly honed lip combo. If you spotted Johnson’s Lucy applying a brown lip liner in a sleek black tube, you’re not alone. Eagle-eyed fans quickly identified the product as MAC Cosmetics’ iconic lip liner.
According to @dakotajohnsonscloset on Instagram, the lip liner appears in an early scene in Materialists, where Lucy peers over into a mirror and applies it. Fans revealed it’s actually the shade Oak, which MAC Cosmetics describes as a 'soft beige brown' shade that gives Johnson’s pout a touch of depth while blurring seamlessly into her lip’s natural shade.
Beloved by beauty obsessives and experts alike, MAC’s iconic lip liner formula features a precision tip and a comfortable, creamy texture that can be used to fill and outline the lips.

Johnson’s go-to makeup artist, Georgie Eisdell, hasn’t shared a full breakdown of the products used to bring Lucy to life. Still, if it’s anything similar to the actress’s red carpet must-haves, it’s clean, breathable, and can withstand make-out sessions with Lucy’s promising suitor (Pedro Pascal) and a not-so-promising ex (Chris Evans). And with 20 per cent off MAC Cosmetics’ site, this is a steal you can’t miss.
