The Very Best Shampoos For Coloured Hair
These are the tried-and-tested colour-protecting formulas for blondes, brunettes and redheads.

If like me, you're easily enamoured by a statement new hair colour, you'll know all too well that the trendiest shades are usually the most volatile. From viral cowboy copper to coveted 2014 Tumblr greys, the punchiest of hues are usually the first to fade away; not to mention, the cost and effort of upkeep is enough to send anyone back to their natural tone.
As a beauty writer with fleeting commitment to any particular shade (I've been a redhead, brunette and blonde in the last two years alone), I've become well versed in the art of keeping up both an at-home and in-salon colour. My secret weapon (and the essential product recommended by hairdressers)? A high-quality, targeted shampoo for coloured hair.
Whether you're looking for a luxurious lather to care for bleached or damaged hair, a volumising formula for fine, dyed tresses or an antidote to sensitive scalps that don't compromise your fresh gloss, here you'll find everything you need to know about colour-protect shampoos.

Does Coloured Hair Need Special Shampoo?
In short, yes. If you want to protect your fresh colour from fading and damage, you should invest in a shampoo specifically designed to protect dyed hair.
'Colouring hair (particularly going lighter) can damage hair as the process involves lifting the cuticles to either remove natural colour pigments in the hair, or deposit colour molecules further into the hair,' explains Michael Lendon, creative director at Aveda. 'After the colour service we need to seal the cuticle back down tight to avoid fading and return the hair to its shiny natural state.' Lendon recommends invested in bond-building formulas, alongside a shampoo that will to increase the longevity of your colour.
What Type Of Shampoo Is Best For Dyed Hair?
Not all shampoos will work harmoniously with coloured hair, particularly if they offer a deeply penetrating cleanse and contain high levels of sulphates. And it's not just the strand-loving suds that can impact your colour - it's the water too.
'pH levels affect the way the cuticle lays,' says Lendon. 'Keeping them tight and closed will result in hair that is shiner and healthier looking with less likelihood of fading. Choose products that have a lower pH (acidic) level as this will keep cuticles sealed. Annoyingly, tap water (especially in hard-water areas) has a higher pH (alkaline) and just water alone can contribute to colour fading.'
How Do You Keep Your Hair Colour From Fading?
Our top tips? Invest in a shampoo from a trusted haircare brand that offers colour-protection technology and refrain from over-washing your fresh tint. If you live in an area with hard water, try investing in a shower filter and avoid rinsing your strands under hot temperatures during post-colour initial washes; this will reduce the number of pigment molecules that escape.
Take suncare into consideration too. Wear a hat, or opt for a shielding product like Aveda’s Sun Care Protective Veil, which contains UVA/UVB filters which help to combat the drying effects of rays.
