The Best Shampoo Bars For More Eco-Friendly Showering
Ditch the bottles this Plastic Free July with our lab-tested greener alternatives.

If Greta, David and Leo haven’t already encouraged you to make some more sustainable life choices, maybe looking at your beauty wastage might.
Unfortunately, the beauty industry has a rep for being one of the biggest plastic wasters. In the UK alone, we ditch 520 million bottles every year – and that’s just shampoo.
It's not enough to rinse out and hope for the best; being truly eco-friendly requires stopping virgin plastic from not only being wasted, but produced in the first place. Step forward, shampoo bars.
And what better time than Plastic Free July to shine a spotlight on some brands doing their bit to help us ditch our beauty packaging, with efficacious formulations to boot.
Though they've been a ‘thing’ for some time now, are such formulations really advanced enough for you to say goodbye to your trusted liquid shampoo? We had to find out...
Are shampoo bars better for the environment?
As mentioned, when it comes to the environment, the beauty industry is a top offender.
Although the UK government brought in a plastic packaging tax in April 2022 for manufacturers to help combat the problem, there’s a lot of work to be done. While we may have long banished microbeads, the personal care industry still produces more than 120 billion units of packaging annually.
Shampoo bars, on the other hand, are encased in either recyclable, recycled or biodegradable packaging, with some as naked as the day they were manufactured, ditching plastic all together.
Most of the formulas are also biodegradable and require you to add your own H2O, meaning water wastage is kept to a minimum – you just add as you go.
They’re more compact than a giant bottle too, which will cut down your carbon footprint, as fewer lorries are needed on the roads to transport them. Plus, they make the ultimate travel buddy.
Best of all, they do a great job at washing your hair, making it a win-win.
How do you store a shampoo bar?
Give your bar a bit of space from other products on your bathroom shelf and allow them to completely dry out in between washes. Otherwise, they’ll start to crumble like granola.
Some feature a handy string, so you can hang them in your shower to dry, or come with a tin to help water drainage. If all else fails, simply place on a soap dish when not needed.
How we test
We asked 650 people to try 45 brands of shampoo bars for a four-week period, to see which ones really left locks smoother and more nourished. Our testing panel judged each one on their cleaning capabilities and the overall effect they had on hair.
Meanwhile, in the ELLE beauty lab, we used a Diastron machine on wet hair to measure hair smoothness after being washed with each bar.
