Spoilers ahead.
After a five-year wait, the sequel to 2020’s celebrated Netflix action flick The Old Guard finally arrived in early July 2025. But the sequel, The Old Guard 2, left audiences with a head-scratching cliffhanger, creating as many questions as it offered answers. Fans of the first two films are clamoring to know if there will be another chapter in the franchise coming.
Here’s what we know about the possibility of The Old Guard 3 so far.
Will there be a The Old Guard 3?
The Old Guard 3 has not been officially confirmed. However, Greg Rucka, the writer of the comics upon which the series is based, said in a 2020 interview with Looper.com that the Netflix adaptation was intended to become a trilogy.
“There is a complete three-part story that can be told,” Rucka said. “God willing, if it’s a success, Netflix comes back and says, ‘Hey, let’s do it again.’ There’s more to tell, and there are questions that we want to answer.”
After The Old Guard 2 was released this year, director Victoria Mahoney told Entertainment Weekly that she had “no idea” whether a third film might materialize. Asked for her thoughts, she told the outlet that she “hope[s] for it” but will not return to direct another installment. “I hope that audiences get it,” she continued, “and I hope everyone that goes to play on that third one has a ball and kicks ass and I’ll be rooting for them. I won’t be there, but I will be rooting for them.”
Actors Henry Golding and Marwan Kenzari also shared their hopes with Decider. Said Kenzari, “I think we just all hope that we [get a sequel], as fast as we can. We don’t need a lot of excuses to hang out, on-set and off.”
“We’re getting old,” Golding joked, with Kenzari adding, “Yeah, so if we want to pull off these stunts and fights, we need to get cracking!”
In a separate interview with The Hollywood Reporter, star Charlize Theron admitted that she was far from certain Netflix would give The Old Guard a third round. “One thing I’ve learned in this business is that there are no guarantees,” she said, later adding, “I’m being completely honest when I say that we have absolutely no idea what that [third film] would even look like.”
What would happen in The Old Guard 3?
The Old Guard 2 ends with Discord (Uma Thurman) capturing almost the entire team of immortals. Andy (Theron) and Quynh (Vân Veronica Ngô) have reunited and are planning to rescue their friends together. But as exit Tuah’s (Golding) library to begin their search, the credits roll, leaving viewers to assume a third film is inevitable.
Golding shared his thoughts on the cliffhanger with Decider, saying, “We always knew we wouldn’t be able to summarize such an epic crescendo in one movie. We knew there was going to have to be a cut point. The jeopardy of Andy having lost the Old Guard was such a carrot to dangle in front of the audience. Now she’s on the back foot. What does she do? She’s back with her eternal lover. The power that those two have is a force to be reckoned with, and so the impending clash with Uma Thurman’s character [Discord]—it’s salivating just to think about. Somebody had to be put in a body bag, and I guess it was us!”
Mahoney defended the cliffhanger decision in an interview with ScreenRant, explaining that all she cares about is “what’s occurring with the characters in any given moment...That it happens to be a cliffhanger, that it involves some stuff that may make some people happy, and some people pissed-off, that’s not my circus. I’m just trying to do it honestly and earnestly. I stand behind it.”
