Selena Gomez and Taylor Swift have been friends for more than 16 years, and in that time, the two singers have played a small role in shaping each other’s albums. Most recently, Gomez explained to iHeartRadio that the two pop icons send each other unreleased music to review.
Asked about Swift’s Instagram Story praising I Said I Love You First, Gomez explained, “It was very sweet. You know with Taylor, I value her opinion so much because she’s super honest. So I always play her—off of any of my albums—like the top two [songs] that I like to see what she thinks. And she’s done the same. I would never be like, ‘That’s a terrible song,’ because she’s so freaking good, but she definitely will say, like, ‘That one’s OK, but I think that one’s good.’”
Gomez appreciates the feedback. “It’s very helpful is what I’ll say,” she continued. “And I love people who are honest.”
She then added that one of her songs once moved Swift to tears. “And then there are other knockouts, like when I played her ‘Lose You to Love Me,’ before it came out [in 2019],” Gomez said. “She and her amazing mom [Andrea Swift] started to cry, and then I started crying. You know, it’s very sweet.”
Gomez has spoken about her friendship with Swift before, telling WSJ magazine in January 2020, “There’s so much of my friendship with Taylor that people don’t know about because we don’t necessarily feel the need to post about everything we do. She has showed up for me in ways that I would have never expected. Flown in because I was hurt and was going through something. Stuff that was going on with my family. It’s been proven year after year and in every moment of my life that she is one of my best friends in the world. We don’t agree on everything, but we respect each other with everything.”
