Proenza Schouler showed its fall 2019 collection in one of the towers going up at Hudson Yards, the new development revitalizing a neighborhood an acquaintance of mine used to call CraBePa (the crap behind Penn Station). Show settings serve to enhance a brand’s overall message, and this one seemed to be about a recommitment to NYC (after showing a few seasons in Paris) and its on-the-go women. The collection felt cohesive and imminently wearable. There were boxy felt pant suits worn with sturdy square toe boots, reworked trench coats that belted and wrapped in unexpected ways, and midi-length pleated knit dresses that bounced as the models hustled down the runway. It felt like a blueprint for a New York uniform, because when you’re as busy as everyone in New York always seems to be, who has time to waste getting dressed?
