Tory Burch's fall 2019 collection was inspired by Black Mountain College, the short-lived (it existed from 1933-1957) experimental North Carolina liberal arts school whose alumni—including Dorothea Rockburne, Cy Twombly, Robert Rauschenberg, Merce Cunningham, John Cage, Buckminster Fuller, Elaine De Kooning and Allen Ginsberg (just to name a few!)—would go on to shape modern art in America. And sure, perhaps the color palette of primary reds, blues and yellows, tamped down in mens suiting colors (greys, brown glen plaids, ivory) evoked American Modernism, as did the clean angular lines and color blocking on long slim dress coats.
But if you didn't know about any of the references, this was just a great collection of wearable cold-weather basics. I immediately wanted to wear look 6, a grey knit mock-turtleneck sweater worn over Glen plaid pants, and made a note to try to copy the outfit right away. The standout ankle-skimming coats made me reconsider all my short-hemmed coats. Cowboy boots with the perfect amount of slouch and heft to them balanced out the lean lines, who cares if they look like Fendi's standouts from last season?
