Vacuum technology has come a long way, and nowhere is that more evident than the smart features built into today's robot vacuums. High-end models can use sensors, lasers, and cameras to map your home and learn to avoid falling down stairs and bumping into furniture. Even budget models can still distinguish between hard floors and carpets, and adjust their cleaning accordingly. Some are even programmable with an app or controlled by voice via Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant.

There are many things to consider when shopping for a robot vacuum (especially if you have pets), not the least of which is the price. While no robot vacuum is going to be as powerful as your upright, they're ideal for daily maintenance and quick clean-ups so if this chore is something you don't want to add to your to-do list, a robot vacuum is the answer. With little maintenance, it will last years, too. Check out some of our favorites, and find one that's right for your home.

iRobot Roomba s9+ Robot Vacuum

iRobot Roomba s9+ Robot Vacuum

The iRobot Roomba s9+ excels in removing debris from hard floors, and it does a great job on carpets, automatically increasing suction when it detects one. Plus, it can be adjusted to do two passes for an extra-thorough cleaning. The accompanying app is easy to use and it has a number of useful features like the ability to see the maps the robot makes of your home as it cleans, set a schedule for cleaning when you leave the house, and designate areas or even individual items in a room as no-go zones to avoid any possible damage. Its voice command capabilities can even recognize when you tell your robot to clean under or around items in a room.

Like many other robot vacuums, it doesn’t clean right up to the charging base, but it does have a self-emptying dirt disposal system that automatically transfers the dirt it has collected to the sealed, bag-lined dustbin in the base. It's easy to remove, and the vacuum's self-cleaning roller brushes won't clog with pesky pet hairs either. A high-efficiency filter traps irritating allergens, but note that it's not washable.

Miele Scout RX2 Robot Vacuum

Miele Scout RX2 Robot Vacuum

With outstanding maneuverability, the Miele Scout RX2 Home Vision tackles every size mess efficiently, without bumping into obstacles. It's great on bare floors and works faster than most, but it does have a bristle brush instead of rubber, which may require some maintenance. The combination of a 500 ml dustbin, up to two-hour runtime, and its speedy, bump-free clean-up make this model a great choice for large homes. It has a lot of modern features like two front cameras that transmit a live image feed via the app to your smart device and excellent obstacle avoidance but does not have the capability to set no-go zones in the app nor HEPA filter. The Scout RX2 reaches deep into corners and edges and automatically increases its suction power when it detects a carpet, though it can get significantly louder at the higher power mode.

From the Miele app, you can control the robot’s movements, see which rooms have already been cleaned, and direct the robot to an area for spot cleaning. And if you’d prefer not to be connected to your robot vacuum, you can completely remove the Wi-Fi module and use the remote control to schedule cleaning sessions. The cleaning tool for maintenance is installed in the dustbin, so it can’t get lost or misplaced, but the dustbin must be manually emptied each time.

roborock S7 Robot Vacuum and Mop

roborock S7 Robot Vacuum and Mop

The Roborock S7 can vacuum and wet-mop your floors simultaneously, with an innovative sonic technology that scrubs floors up to 3,000 times per minute and it automatically lifts the pads to avoid wetting carpets once detected. The S7 has a rubber brush instead of one with bristles which helps minimize pet hair tangles. You can also buy an auto-empty charging dock that makes cleanup even more simple and hands-free. Its filter is not HEPA certified, but it can be washed and is easy to pop out of the robot’s dust bin.

The S7 gets great reviews on Amazon—77% of them are 5-star ratings—with dozens of users gushing about the vacuum’s great performance and their love for the Roborock app. It lets you schedule automatic cleaning for different parts of your home, set boundaries for the robot around where you do and don’t want it to clean, and view the exact route your robot vacuum has taken while it cleans. Plus, if a room in your home needs a little extra TLC (like the kitchen after you make dinner), you can easily set up different cleaning intensities with the app too.

During testing, this pick vacuumed every size mess efficiently and more quickly than our other winners. Rotating front brushes reach deep into corners and edges. iRobot Roomba i3 EVO

iRobot Roomba i3 EVO

You love your pet, but you hate the way it sheds. We get it, and so do the folks at iRobot who created this robot vacuum specifically to clean up long pet hair with a 75-minute run time and i3 navigation to vacuum your floors in neat rows. The best part—it's quieter than most models, about the sound of your microwave.

eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S

eufy BoostIQ RoboVac 11S

Amazon reviewers love this robot vacuum because it's easy on the wallet but still gets the job done. It uses BoostIQ™ Technology to automatically increase suction power when it detects an extra-strength cleaning job is needed. It also recharges on its own, so it'll be ready to come out and clean when you need it. Plus, it's nice to look at and that's because of its sleek design (it was recently re-engineered toward a slimmer design, at just 2.85 inches tall) with an anti-scratch tempered glass-top cover for protection. It also packs in an infrared sensor to avoid your furniture and drop-sensing tech to steer clear of potential falls.

iRobot Roomba i6+ Robot Vacuum

iRobot Roomba i6+ Robot Vacuum

Now that the i6+ Roomba has received an upgrade to its Smart Mapping technology, there's very little difference between this and the i7+ Roomba. It maps your home and runs on the schedule you give it, and when it's done it returns to its base and empties itself. The base won't need emptying for up to 60 days. It can learn voice commands from you through Alexa or Google Assistant. It works wonders with pet hair, and its filter catches 99% of pet dander allergens.
