"All I wear is dad hats :(," senior beauty editor Julie Schott DM'd over the holiday break. She included a link to an Instagram from one of our favorite accounts, The Shade Room, which read as follows
After I LOLLLLd, I thought to myself...could we have another Normcore situation on our hands? Baseball caps, now rebranded as #DadHats, are popping up seemingly out of nowhere, but they're actually...everywhere? Well, yeah. Which is why I've put together answers to some FAQs about this new-ish hat trend for those of you who may be confused, plus 6 options for you to shop.
What is a dad hat? Simply put, a baseball cap. But not a snapback, flatbrim, or fitted. A dad hat is a baseball cap that's canvas or cotton and has a slightly curved brim (not too curved, though) and is probably a little oversized on the wearer. Unless, of course, you're actually a dad—then it probably fits you perfectly.
Where have I seen dad hats?
Barack Obama signs autographs in them.
North West paired hers with a $3,500 fur coat.
Drake wore one to ask what we thought of his mixtape.
Even Hillary Clinton wore one back in 1998.
How do I wear a dad hat? Just put it on your head. They aren't supposed to match your look— that's the genius of dad hats. But when in doubt, pair with a crewneck sweatshirt to really create the best outfit.
