Since 2023, the controversial denim trend has slowly crept back into the zeitgeist and is now being fully embraced by a number of TikTok influencers and A-listers like Bella and Gigi Hadid, Hailey Bieber, and Emily Ratajkowski.
“I think jorts are making a comeback because they offer an easy, comfortable summer option that can be quite chic when styled correctly,” says Shelby Comroe, celebrity stylist and editor at The RealReal. “People gravitate towards longer jorts because they feel more versatile than shorter alternatives. While short shorts have a specific ‘time and place’ vibe, longer jorts can be dressed up or down, making them appropriate for various occasions.”
While the aesthetic certainly has its critics, I personally fall into the camp of ardent supporters who believe jorts are far more comfortable and attractive than their tight, butt-grazing counterparts. So, what exactly are today’s best jorts, and how can you, too, pull them off? I spoke with Comroe and fellow stylist Cindy Conroy to get the lowdown.
While technically any denim cut-offs could be qualified as “jorts” (a portmanteau of the words “jeans” and “shorts”), the internet is currently equating the look to Bermuda-length silhouettes popularized in the ’90s and early 2000s. “My favorite styles of jorts include vintage-looking, lighter-wash Bermuda styles, as well as dark-wash or black options,” notes Comroe. “I also think some distressed pairs can be cool. I tend to shy away from super high-waisted pairs to avoid looking like a ’90s mom on vacation and instead like my long jorts slung low on my waist for that effortlessly cool look.”
“Think of jorts as a blank canvas with endless styling possibilities,” Comroe adds. “For super hot days, you can channel a classic throwback vibe by pairing your jorts with a white baby tee, sleek belt, layered jewels, and buzzy sneakers. For a more feminine touch, try styling your jorts with a sheer ruffly top and some strappy sandals, complemented by a cute mini bag (think a style like Carrie Bradshaw’s Fendi Baguette). To transition your jorts for evening wear, give them a sleek feel with a black blazer, black pumps, a statement clutch, and bold earrings.”
Entirely new to the jorts trend? Conroy says you can’t go wrong styling a pair with a crisp white button-down. “It’s an unexpected contrast to the grungy longline silhouette and a great way to dip your toe into the look,” she notes. For an easy, nostalgic ensemble, try styling your jorts with an oversized tee or jersey, she adds.
