We've all been there: You're late for work and can't find anything you actually want to wear. Clothing is strewn all over the floor, your dresser drawers are overflowing, and your bed, well, it's under there somewhere. But keeping your clothing in its proper place doesn't have to be so hard. To help, we enlisted professional organizer Tova Weinstock of Tidy Tova, who offered 10 doable tips for getting your closet under control—for good.

"The end of every season is a great time to consider what you wore and what fell through the cracks. If there are items that you tried on multiple times and failed to wear, say goodbye. They're taking up valuable space, and you won't suddenly love them next year. Have no mercy and be brave."

"The main reason people can't seem to get their closets under control? There's too much inside! Overstuffing means that there's little room for each piece of clothing to have a home, which makes it frustrating to put things away. If your belongings have a home, they're a breeze to put away and craziness doesn't ensue."

"Always hang clothing so it faces in the same direction. Think about how you approach your closet—the clothing should face in the direction that you look at it. This makes interacting with hanging clothing a lot simpler and streamlined."

"As you take clothing off hangers to get dressed, move the empty hangers to the front of your closet. It's a simple trick that will save you lots of frustration and space: It makes hanging your clothing up at the end of the day nice and simple."

"Organize by category. Make the category that you wear most often (for me, it's button-down shirts) most accessible and arrange accordingly. Least-worn categories should go in the back."

"Necklaces should always hang to avoid tangling, and when possible use clear storage containers so you can easily see what's inside. No more hanging clothing inside-out either. Put it away with the outside out and things will automatically start feeling more organized and tidy."

"Hooks maximize storage and take advantage of all areas, like the backs of doors or smaller walls.
"Everyone should have proper shoe storage. That usually means a shoe rack, but stay away from the slanted ones because shoes slide right off of them. Like anything else, your shoe collection should respect your space; too many shoes will challenge an organized closet. That being said, make sure you're fully maximizing your shoe storage, whether that means a shoe rack or an entire bookcase loaded with shoes. If you're struggling to find space for all of your pairs, consider swapping them out seasonally or by frequency of use and keep the extras under your bed. A massive shoe mound is a big no-no."

"Hang, launder, or fold your clothing at the end of each day. Take your clothing off right by your closet so you can address each garment immediately. And do not let anything hit the floor!"
