Longtime Chanel ambassador Kristen Stewart is back at the Met Gala to honor the fashion house’s late designer Karl Lagerfeld, whom she had become close with during her 10-plus years as the face of the brand.
For the occasion, Stewart is wearing Chanel, naturally, specifically Chanel Resort 2017 for the museum’s “Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty” theme. Stewart opted to pose solo on the red carpet.
The actress spoke about her close relationship with Lagerfeld in a Vanity Fair profile published in September 2019, just months after Lagerfeld passed away in February 2019.
“It’s funny how he presents—so austere and so scary. He wasn’t, though,” Stewart told the outlet. “He was incredibly inviting—insanely, shockingly unpretentious. He liked what he liked because he liked it. He was a fancy motherfucker, but it was true to him. It’s almost like he sensed he was intimidating, so he was like, ‘No. To have a creative heart is daunting, but let’s get it beating faster and harder.’ He was always touching you while speaking to you. He never talked at you—if he was talking to you, he was usually holding your hand. Luckily he knew how to leave a trace. There’s just a feeling that he gave me, an encouraging attaboy thing that shapes you in really profound ways.”
Regarding her relationship with Chanel, she said, “With Chanel, I’ve never been made to feel like I was telling a story that wasn’t being pulled out of me in a really honest way.”
