Jonathan Saunders was announced today as the new chief creative officer of New York-based label Diane von Furstenberg, effective immediately.

He will be responsible for the overall creative direction of the brand.

"Jonathan's extraordinary passion for colors and prints, his effortless designs, and his desire to make women feel beautiful make him the perfect creative force to lead DVF into the future," Diane von Furstenberg, the company's founder and chairwoman, said in a statement.

"I could not have found a cooler, more intelligent designer, and I cannot wait to watch him shine as our chief creative officer."

The 39-year-old Scotsman is best known for his eponymous London-based label, which he ran successfully for 12 years before deciding to cease trading last year, citing personal reasons as his impetus.

"It is not a decision that I take lightly and I am eternally grateful to my team for all their hard work and dedication," he said at the time.

He graduated from Central Saint Martins' prestigious MA in printed textiles course in 2002, and within 48 hours he was commissioned to design prints for Alexander McQueen.

In 2003 he founded his own label and quickly became a member of the bright, young British designers considered the "new guard" alongside contemporaries including Erdem and Christopher Kane.

His designs were worn by Michelle Obama, the Duchess of Cambridge, Samantha Cameron, Victoria Beckham, and Emma Watson.

Today's announcement comes a few weeks after rumors, now proved incorrect, began to circulate that he was to succeed Raf Simons as creative director at Dior.
