Nestled on the northern coast of Honduras, Roatán is an island paradise. Though not as well-known as other Caribbean islands, there’s a lot to love about this quaint hidden gem.
For one, the island holds the second-largest barrier reef system in the world, which is perfect for snorkeling (more on that later). Then, consider its authenticity. As soon as you land, you’re met with locals selling fresh fruit, roasted corn, and tamales on the side of the road. You may even spot some roosters and stray dogs roaming around, if you’re lucky. And just like many other tropical locations, there’s no shortage of activities like zip-lining and horseback riding. Suffice it to say, as the largest of the Bay Islands, Roatán has a little something for everyone.

What to See
Snorkeling
One of the coolest things about Roatán is that its coral reefs are part of the larger Mesoamerican Reef—the second-largest barrier reef system in the world. To get a closer look, I recommend going snorkeling (many hotels on the island offer free snorkeling gear). And the coolest part? Because you’re so close to the reef, you’ll get to see—and feel—all the fish swimming right alongside you.
Glass Bottom Boat Ride
If you’d rather stay above water, a glass-bottom boat ride is the next best thing. And just like the snorkeling gear, many resorts offer free two-person boats that you can take out for a spin. But for something a little fancier, you can rent a boat that’s known as a “semi-submarine,” meaning you sit 6 feet below the ocean’s surface with windows surrounding you. For good reason, it’s appropriately dubbed as “a life-size aquarium.”
Sloth Excursion
What’s an island vacation without an animal encounter? Here in Roatán, you can immerse yourself in wildlife by venturing out into the jungle and coming face-to-face with the island’s natural wildlife. Embark on a sloth excursion, where you’ll get the chance to hold and feed sloths that are native to the land. They also offer the same experience for monkeys if you want to pick and choose (or do both).

Where to Eat
Sunken Fish
Located at Tranquilseas, Sunken Fish is a must for anyone who enjoys seafood. On the menu, you’ll find ceviche (my personal favorite), calamari, snapper, octopus, and more. Plus, everything’s fresh—even the bread and pasta are made from scratch. If you go for dinner, make sure to catch a view of the sunset. And, if you have some downtime during your trip, they also host events every week, like Funky Friday (where they serve discounted wings) and Saturday Barbecue (where they serve beef skewers and pork ribs).
Roatán Oasis
“Farm-to-table” takes on a whole new meaning at Roatán Oasis. Located in the West End, this restaurant is perfect for those who are more on the health-conscious side. Here, you’ll find tons of vegetarian and gluten-free options. The menu changes constantly, so you can always expect something new, and many patrons recommend the firecracker cauliflower, if can handle a little spice.
Roatán Chocolate Factory
Those with a sweet tooth should head to Roatán Chocolate Factory. All of the chocolate is handmade and sourced locally from a rainforest in La Mosquitia, which is located in northern Honduras. And to keep things as natural as possible, there are no artificial flavors or preservatives added to their chocolate bars. They offer both milk and dark chocolate and even have almond and coconut flavors; I personally really enjoyed the cashew.

Where to Drink
Tita’s Pink Seahorse
The West End is known for its nightlife, and that’s exactly where Tita’s Pink Seahorse is located. Known as one of the best beachside bars in town, this spot offers Roatán’s signature drink, the Monkey La La, which is made with vodka, Baileys, Kahlúa, coconut cream, and lots of ice. Refreshing doesn’t even begin to describe it. Try it first, thank us later.
Vos Café & Bar
Come for the ambiance and stay for the cocktails. Vos Café & Bar, located inside the Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort and Spa, has everything you need: specialty drinks, pool tables, and a terrace that’s perfect if you want to watch the sun set. And if you happen to stop by a bit earlier in the day, they also offer coffee and a variety of island fruit juices.
Roatán Rum Company
No one does rum like Roatán Rum Company. Not only does it offer tastings—it serves cakes. The rum is smooth and comes in many different flavors like mango, spiced, and dark chocolate. They also sell cigars, if you’re into that. Simply enjoy your drink while you watch the sunset or sit at the bar, or buy a couple of bottles to take back home for friends and family. The owner Frank (pictured above) is super kind and can answer any questions you may have.

Where to Stay
Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort and Spa
Kimpton Grand Roatán Resort and Spa has everything you could possibly want in a hotel: pristine views, an exceptional staff, the gorgeous Kao Kamasa Spa, four distinct restaurants that cater to a wide range of palates, and, most importantly, a direct line to the beach. Located on the island’s Iron Shore, the resort sits right alongside the great barrier reef and features prime views of the ocean. As you walk throughout the property, you’re met with locally made art pieces, striking architecture, and carefully curated design details. The spa, which is inspired by the indigenous Pesh people of Roatán, was my personal favorite amenity. It features several soaking pools that range in temperature, so you can choose between taking a cold plunge or relaxing in the hot tub. Snacks and hot tea are served inside, which will enhance your relaxation experience. All of the guest rooms are gorgeous, but the luxury suites are on another level. Those come with a private plunge pool that overlooks the resort. And others have private decks with outdoor showers. What’s not to love?
Xbalanque Resort
Enjoy access to a private beach at Xbalanque Resort, located in the West Bay area of Roatán. This boutique property sits on over eight acres of land with native tropical plants and nature trails (ideal for morning strolls). And if you like to meditate, feel free to sit in the garden for a few moments of zen. Yoga is also offered on-site, and you can choose from private or group classes.
Barefoot Cay Boutique Resort and Marina
If you prefer a spot that’s a little more intimate and cozy, Barefoot Cay Boutique Resort and Marina is for you. The resort has a handful of villas and suites boasting oceanfront views, and the property can accomodate 28 guests (which makes it the perfect place for any wedding). Plus, it’s conveniently located about four miles east of Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport.
