Actress, model, and YSE Beauty mogul Molly Sims couldn’t have pulled off her latest project without her kids. In fact, it was their first grade teacher, Julie Paiva, who initially shared the seeds of a story with her: a (fictional) tale about a woman so eager to get pregnant that she wears a fake baby belly to pass herself off as a mother-to-be. The idea “resonated with me on such a deep level,” Sims writes via email. When she was in her early thirties, Sims memorably played a pregnant character on the NBC comedy-drama Las Vegas, for which she, too, had to wear a fake baby belly. “It was the first time I really realized I might want to start a family,” she continues. “And I had also just got dumped, so it just hit home that you wake up one day and everyone around you is getting pregnant or starting a family, and I wasn’t yet. I immediately knew [Paiva’s idea] was a story that women—especially moms—would connect with, both in its humor and vulnerability.”
Under her production company, Something Happy Productions, Sims got involved with Paiva’s script; brought in Adam Sandler and Happy Madison Productions as partners; and “managed to get Amy Schumer attached [as the lead actress], which, honestly, felt like an insane moment,” Sims continues. “After talking about this story for four years, to finally see it come to life on set was beyond fulfilling, and I’m just so proud to be part of a film that showcases the unvarnished truth of pregnancy and motherhood.”
Sims has needed a dose of joy in the wake of the wildfires that recently devastated her Palisades community. “These last couple of months have been incredibly tough,” she says. “Thankfully, I still have my home, but almost everyone around me has lost everything and is struggling to find some sense of normalcy. What’s been beautiful, though, is how people have come together to help.” For her part, Sims has worked closely with the organization Baby2Baby, and YSE Beauty partnered with multiple California brands to donate essential items for affected families and raise money for the Beauty Together wildfire relief fund. “The most important thing is remembering that, while the world will slowly move on from this tragedy, these families will continue to face the aftermath for months, maybe years to come. It’s vital that we continue to come together as a community to support them through their recovery.”
A moment of normalcy was welcome last night, when Kinda Pregnant premiered at The Paris Theater in New York City. “I can’t wait for women, and everyone really, to see themselves in this story,” Sims says. “It’s a movie that makes you feel seen, heard, and, most importantly, not alone in this experience.” Below, the producer walks us through how she got ready for the big event.
