Spoilers below.
The White Lotus Thailand has a bald white man problem. No, really. As a scene in the season 3 premiere comically reveals, there are actually a bunch of them at the resort. Chloe (Charlotte Le Bon) is quick to point this out to her new friend, Chelsea (Aimee Lou Wood), joking that these hairline-impaired travelers are secretly called LBHs, a.k.a. Losers Back Home, by the staff. One of them just so happens to be Chloe’s boyfriend. But this bald white man, unlike the other visitors, is not a newcomer. He’s Greg Hunt, who appeared in the first two seasons of the show.
Greg (Jon Gries) first appeared in the White Lotus Maui in season 1, where he met Tanya (Jennifer Coolidge) and fell for her... or her money. For starters, he lied about having a terminal illness, which Tanya eventually paid to help treat. In season 2, he takes his then-wife Tanya on a trip to Sicily but leaves abruptly for a suspicious work trip to Denver (he said he works at the “Bureau of Land Management”), leaving Tanya behind. It’s revealed at the end of the season that Greg’s sudden exit was for nefarious reasons: He collaborated with Quentin (Tom Hollander) to murder Tanya, so that he could inherit her wealth. Tanya figures this all out in the iconic “These gays, they’re trying to kill me!” episode and ends up shooting them out in a blaze before falling off the boat and dying. At the time, we didn’t know what happened to Greg, but now we do.
Earlier in season 2, Gries skirted around the question of whether Greg was with Tanya for her money or not. “I think Greg has become accustomed to being taken care of in this situation. At the same time, I don’t think he’s uncomfortable living that lifestyle, and I think that he would live that lifestyle if he had money of his own,” he told Entertainment Weekly in 2022.
Though Greg doesn’t say much—also, he goes by “Gary” now—Chloe reveals that they live together near the Thailand resort, which means he quickly rebounded from Tanya and seems to be able to afford frequent visits to The White Lotus. His comeback poses even more questions: Is Greg behind the murder this season too? Should we be worried for Chloe? Or is Greg actually the next victim? If it were up to Jennifer Coolidge, it would be the latter.
“My hope for Greg is that he ends up in some horrific jail somewhere. I think dying would be just too good, too easy for him,” she told Deadline after the season 2 finale, which saw her character’s demise. “He’s a really creepy guy and was plotting this woman’s murder. From the beginning, he saw a woman with a lot of money and wanted to take it from her, and take her life. So, I think he deserves a terrible fate.”
We’ll see if he meets that fate in season 3, but so far, he’s been laying low. (As low as one can at an extravagant Thai resort.) From his double dates with Rick and Chelsea, he has shared few details about himself: that he’s now retired, that he used to do “this and that” for work, and that he and Chloe met through “matchmaking service in Dubai.” But he’s still got a bit of money to be dining at The White Lotus regularly and owning a yacht. As he tells his guests on the boat in season 3, episode 4, he also used to do “government work” and “investing.”
Chloe tends to do more of the talking regarding Greg’s past. While gabbing with Chelsea, she says she learned that Greg’s ex-wife was “a real mental patient,” which means Greg clearly hasn’t been speaking highly of his late spouse. Worse, he told Chloe a false about Tanya’s death: that she was so depressed she walked into the ocean and never came back. Part of her leg was later found floating in the water.
Belinda (Natasha Rothwell), thanks to her own detective work, figured out what really happened to Tanya. She did recognize Greg from his stay in The White Lotus Maui, but when she approached him, he denied visiting the hotel and dating Tanya. Belinda later searched Tanya online and learned she was found dead and her husband, Greg, was wanted for questioning. In Thailand, he’s far from the Sicilian police’s reach. While this gives us some hope for Greg to be brought to justice, it also puts a target on Belinda’s back. Sure enough, in season 3, episode 4, Greg is seen staring at a photo of Belinda and her son from her Instagram.
Is Greg going after Belinda next? What shady business is he up to now?
