The Substance took theaters by storm, but the body horror film starring Demi Moore is not for the weak. Some viewers might prefer to watch it at home so they can take a breath and a walk around the block after witnessing French filmmaker Coralie Fargeat’s confrontational and explicit imagery.
In the film, Moore plays an aging star named Elisabeth Sparkle, who decides to experiment with a black market drug that turns back time and generates a younger version of herself (played by Margaret Qualley). However, the older and younger Elisabeths must switch places every seven days, leading to a very violent competition between her two selves. The film is a bold commentary on how women are subjected to ageism and misogyny in Hollywood—and everywhere.
The Substance has earned five 2025 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Actress in a Leading Role (Moore), Directing (Fargeat), and Original Screenplay. While Moore lost in her category to Mikey Madison, the film still took home an Academy Award for Makeup and Hairstyling.
After earning critical acclaim throughout the 2025 awards season, The Substance has secured its place as one of the past year’s most talked-about films. Moore took home multiple major awards for her performance, including a Critics Choice Award, Golden Globe, and SAG Award.
Is The Substance streaming?
The Substance is a Mubi release, which is known for streaming more experimental art house films. The film was released in theaters on September 20 and began streaming on the site on October 31, just in time for Halloween.
According to Deadline, Mubi acquired distribution rights to the film ahead of its premiere at Cannes in May. So fans will have to subscribe to watch The Substance, unless Mubi restructures their current agreement for the popular movie. A monthly subscription costs about $7.99, but Mubi does offer a seven day free trial if viewers wish to wait until the film is officially available to give it a try.
If you prefer to own the film, it’s also available to buy or rent on digital.
