Two decades after its release, Freaky Friday is getting a sequel—and with it a remixed version of the body-swap story that was such a hit in the early 2000s.

The 2003 Disney film saw Lindsay Lohan as 16-year-old Anna and Jamie Lee Curtis as her mom, Tess, accidentally switch bodies after an earthquake-inducing experience with a pair of fortune cookies. This time around, Anna and Tess are older and wiser...but perhaps no less susceptible to stray magic.

In May 2023, the New York Times reported that Disney had confirmed a sequel film was in development. Now, Freakier Friday is nearing its theatrical release. Ahead, here’s everything we know about the project so far.

Who will be in the cast?

Curtis and Lohan will be reprising their mother-daughter roles as Anna and Tess Coleman. They will be joined by original cast members including Chad Michael Murray (Jake), Mark Harmon (Ryan), Christina Vidal Mitchell (Maddie), Haley Hudson (Peg), Rosalind Chao (Pei-Pei), Lucille Soong (Pei-Pei’s mom), and Stephen Tobolowsky (Mr. Bates).

Newcomers to the franchise include Julia Butters as Anna’s daughter, Harper; Manny Jacinto as Anna’s fiancé, Eric; Sophia Hammons as Eric’s daughter, Lily; Chloe Fineman as a “kooky dance instructor”; Vanessa Bayer as a fortune teller; and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.

What is the plot of Freakier Friday?

In an interview for her 2025 ELLE cover, Lohan said that “[Freakier Friday] is a feel-good movie, which is what I want to give people. And it’s fun. When I saw the second cut, I wanted to get up and dance at the end.”

The story re-introduces us to the Coleman family decades after the events of the original. In Freakier Friday’s timeline, Anna is now a mother to the teenage Harper and engaged to the British restaurateur Eric Davies. Eric himself as a teenage daughter, Lily, whom Harper describes as “a little demon thing with an obnoxious accent.” Still, Anna and Eric are about to get married—at least, until a run-in with a fortune teller at Anna’s bachelorette party results in yet another body swap. This time, Anna swaps bodies with her daughter, while Tess swaps bodies with her soon-to-be granddaughter-in-law. (As Lily—in Tess’s body—puts it in the trailer, “I’m part of some dodgy family curse? And I’m the eldest?”)

Harper and Lily, in Anna and Tess’s bodies, decide to use their newfound power as adults to “break our parents up for good.” To do so, they’ll reunite Anna (or, anyway, her body) with her “first love,” Jake. As Anna herself might put it, could everyone just, like, chill for a sec??

When will Freakier Friday be released?

In October 2024, it was announced that the film would be released on August 8, 2025.

Can I watch a trailer?

Yes! A teaser was released on March 14, which you can watch here.

Then, on June 6, Disney dropped the full-length trailer, which gives fans a closer look at Curtis and Lohan back in their iconic mother-daughter roles, plus plenty of nostalgic callbacks. Check it out below.
