On Friday, March 1, the second half of Denis Villeneuve’s adaptation of Frank Herbert’s space epic Dune at last hit theaters. Fans (and those hoping to become fans) should be sure to watch Part One before they dive into Part Two, as the latter wastes no time settling into the action. Part One is no longer playing in theaters, so viewers must either turn to a steaming service to experience the adventure, or purchase their own copy of the film.
Part One stars Timothée Chalamet and Zendaya, with Chalamet in the leading role of Paul Atreides. During this first chapter in the saga, Paul is thrown into the center of a massive intergalactic battle for one of the most important resources in the universe, a good known as “spice.” Spice is harvested from the desert planet Arrakis, and though its properties are somewhat mysterious, it improves cognitive functioning and is essential for intergalactic travel (and, therefore, colonization). Paul’s father, the noble Duke Leto (Oscar Isaac), is ordered by the Emperor to watch over Arrakis, but Paul and his mother Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson) end up on their own in the unwelcoming desert, where they encounter Zendaya’s Chani and her native Fremen kin.
The cast is star-studded, also including Jason Mamoa, Josh Brolin, Stellan Skarsgård, Javier Bardem, Sharon Duncan-Brewster, Chang Chen, Dave Bautista, David Dastmalchian, and Golda Rosheuvel. Dune: Part 2 added to the cast with Florence Pugh, Austin Butler, Christopher Walken, Souhelia Yacoub, and Anya Taylor-Joy.
How can you stream Dune: Part One?
The first installment was released in theaters and on Max at the same time, both on October 22, 2021. The film remains on Max for those who have a subscription. It can also be rented from Apple, Amazon, Google Play, YouTube, and a number of other streaming services.
And if you just can’t get enough Dune, David Lynch’s 1984 adaptation is also streaming on Max.
