Lily-Rose Depp has arrived at the 2025 Oscars. Tonight marks a significant moment in the young actress’s career, as her film Nosferatu is up for four nominations in the Production Design, Makeup and Hairstyling, Costume Design, and Cinematography categories. She is also set to present at this year’s ceremony, along with Selena Gomez, Zoe Saldaña, Ben Stiller, and more.
The red carpet marked another major fashion moment for Depp, who has long been a Chanel muse. She made her runway debut for the house in 2016 under Karl Lagerfeld’s creative direction, a moment she still considers one of her proudest. “He [Lagerfeld] was always the wittiest, sharpest person in the room. I think about him all the time,” she told Harper’s Bazaar UK. This evening, Depp wore a custom black floral lace halter dress from the house with a peplum. The look is inspired by one from its spring/summer 1995 haute couture collection and took 515 hours to make, according to the brand. She accessorized with Chanel high jewelry.
During the ceremony, Depp introduced Nosferatu’s Linda Muir, who was nominated for the Best Costume Design Oscar.
Nosferatu, Robert Eggers’s reimagining of the 1922 silent horror classic, features Depp as Ellen Hutter, a young woman caught in the wrath of the monstrous Count Orlok. The role pushed the 25-year-old actress into new creative territory, requiring extensive physical movement work and a shift into period-specific language and performance.
Speaking to Interview Magazine, Depp revealed that her preparation included working with a movement coach and rehearsing in a corset to adapt to the film’s 19th-century setting. “I thought I was just going to go and freak out and we’ll improvise,” she said. “And then I got there, and it was very much choreographed.”
Eggers, known for his meticulous historical detail in films like The Witch and The Northman, cast Depp after an emotional audition in which she performed the film’s opening monologue. “She was, as she is in the film, incredibly brave, and raw, and powerful. Her ability to tune into this dark and haunted place so quickly is pretty phenomenal,” he told Deadline.
Depp’s breakout role in Nosferatu has been widely praised, and her co-star Nicholas Hoult called her performance “some of the most impressive” he has ever seen.
