After spending last Sunday at the BAFTAs with his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, Timothée Chalamet is back in Los Angeles for the SAG Awards. The star chose to walk the red carpet on his own, wearing a Chrome Hearts leather blazer and pants with a BRAT green top. Yes, brat summer lives on. The inspiration behind the look, however, like many other of Chalamet’s recent outfits, was Bob Dylan.
Chalamet has two films nominated tonight: A Complete Unknown and Dune: Part Two. His performance as Bob Dylan in the former earned him an Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role nod. The entire cast of A Complete Unknown was also nominated for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture. Dune: Part Two, meanwhile, is up for Outstanding Action Performance by a Stunt Ensemble in a Motion Picture.
Earlier this month, Chalamet spoke to W magazine about how his prep to play Dylan began while he was filming Dune: Part Two. “I was studying guitar on Arrakis, [Dune’s fictional planet],” he said. “Originally, I thought I had no time to prepare, but there were delays due to the Covid lockdown and then the actors’ and writers’ strikes. I began to think the film was cursed, but the five years it took to get the cast and movie finally together ended up being a good thing. Being American, playing an American icon like Bob Dylan is definitely pressured. People have high expectations. I wanted to get it right.”
He touched on the similarities and differences between his characters in the projects. “Frank Herbert, who wrote Dune, and Dylan are both children of the ’60s,” he began. “They both came of age in the folk world. Herbert knew frustration too—his book was turned down by 23 publishers. The biggest difference is that Paul [Atreides from Dune] was put on a path unwillingly, but Dylan was very determined. And there are no giant sandworms in Dylan’s story.”
