On Valentine’s Day, Selena Gomez and Benny Blanco released their first joint interview for Interview Magazine with Mel Ottenberg, promoting their new album I Said I Love You First. In the revealing discussion, the engaged couple shared a lot about their life together, including how Gomez’s marquise diamond engagement ring game to be and some early thoughts regarding their wedding.
After Ottenberg asked to see the ring, Blanco commented, “She’s spectacular.”
Gomez jumped in, saying, “She’s a marquise. Ever since the ‘Good for You’ days—that was, gosh, so many years ago—that’s the diamond I’ve always dreamed of.”
Blanco then joked that when it came to designing the ring, he simply “tried not to fuck up” and take his fiancée’s subtle suggestions.
“She showed me designs and I would always throw little hints,” he said. “I’d be like, ‘Yeah, but if I ever made one, would you want it like this?’ And then she changed her mind halfway through. It used to have huge baguettes on the side and then she was like, ‘I don’t want something that big.’”
Gomez added, “I just think it’s too much,” before agreeing the end result was “perfect.”
The music producer revealed the extra baguettes will be made into earrings, joking, “She basically has three wedding rings.”
He also explained that none of Gomez’s friends helped with the design, he just picked up on her “Easter eggs.”
When asked about the proposal, Gomez replied, “That I want to save for our kids. It was really sweet and the right things were said.”
In mid-December 2024, the star posted about her engagement on Instagram, sharing pictures of the ring and some glimpses of the scene, which involved Taco Bell and what looked like a movie set picnic.
Blanco went into more detail about the stress of planning the big event, explaining, “It was the sickest surprise that she had no idea about and it couldn’t have come at a better time because I was starting to fuck up. The thing that makes me so crazy is, you’re getting engaged, and right before, they’re like, ‘Show me how good of a liar you are. Sneak around and try to do this perfect thing without me knowing.’ At the end, she was starting to get upset because she was like, ‘Why aren’t you coming home tonight?’ And I was like, ‘Oh, I’m just at my friends.’ I almost did it early. But I nailed it, I think.”
Throughout the interview, a few thoughts about their wedding came up. When Ottenberg asked if Gomez planned to convert to Judaism, Blanco laughed and Gomez said it wasn’t in her plans.
“We want our kids to have both of our values, both of our morals,” Blanco added.
But when asked if they would dance the traditional hora at the wedding, he said, “Of course we will.”
As for planning a destination wedding, Gomez said: “Honestly, we haven’t even gotten that far. We want to be so happy right now in this moment...But I don’t know. That might be hard for family.”
