Charli XCX took a break from Brat green at tonight’s Grammy Awards. The singer arrived, wearing a pale-blue chiffon corset gown with a thigh-high leg slit and lace-up boots. The couture look was from Jean Paul Gaultier, and she accessorized with Bucherer Fine Jewellery.
The singer posed on her own.
Charli has several nominations at this year’s ceremony, including: Record of the Year (“360”), Album of the Year (Brat), Best Pop Solo Performance (“Apple”), Best Pop Duo/Group Performance (“Guess” with Billie Eilish), Best Remixed Recording (“Von Dutch” with A.G. Cook, featuring Addison Rae), and Best Music Video (“360”). Ahead of the ceremony, she already won Grammys for Best Dance Pop Recording (“Von Dutch”), Best Dance/Electronic Album (Brat), and Best Recording Package (Brat).
Charli celebrated all her nods on Instagram when they were announced: “hi it’s me :) thank you @recordingacademy,” she wrote.
In December, Charli spoke to Variety about how she planned out Brat’s marketing a full year before its release. “Usually when I’ve made a record, there is this transitional phase [after it’s recorded] where I’m thinking about how to present the music,” she said. “But with this one, I actually did that first—I was thinking about marketing before I was making the music. I had the title first, which was such a brief and a super-useful writing tool. It put boundaries on the songwriting, because immediately if I was writing a song with [longtime collaborators] A.G. Cook or Cirkut, it would just immediately be like, ‘That’s not brat,’ and we would move on and do something that was brat.”
When asked what brat exactly is, Charli used a Martha Stewart example. “Honestly, it’s just an attitude. It’s a vibe,” she said. “Like, when Martha gets mad about an old magazine article and says she’s glad the journalist who wrote it is dead—that is brat. And then when that exact journalist responded and said, ‘Hey! I’m alive, bitch!’—that is extremely brat.’”
