Anora breakout star Mikey Madison has a big night ahead of her at the Golden Globes with her first-ever nomination for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy. The 25-year-old actress, who’s making her debut at the awards show, opted for an on-theme, metallic look. Madison wore a gold, sequined column gown by Bottega Veneta with Tiffany & Co. jewelry.

Madison spoke to ELLE for our Women in Hollywood issue about portraying a character, gentlemen’s club dancer Anora, who is markedly different from herself. “I found myself exerting a lot of energy every day to be at the place Ani was at, where she was always ready to get in a fight,” Madison explained. “She’s very quick, verbally and physically. I don’t feel I’m like that in any way. I wanted her to be very guarded on the outside, but completely torn up and emotional and ragged on the inside. I needed to be in both places, and for you to see, in her eyes, that she’s not just this totally tough girl. I wanted you to see all those layers of who she is, and so for me, getting to those places was important. But also exhausting.”

In regards to acting generally, she felt drawn to the part for reasons she can’t even fully explain. She said, “I just had a yearning for a different kind of connection that I wasn’t feeling, that I wasn’t getting—something I was searching for inside myself manifested in me wanting to be an actor. I can’t pinpoint a specific moment when I was like, ‘I want to be an actor, and this is why.’ Something was pulling me toward it. I was, in my teens, very awkward and uncomfortable with myself. I was looking for something to be a bit emotional, and I think I found it.”
