The Grammys might be a month away, but two of the biggest pop stars in the industry came together at tonight’s Golden Globes for an epic reunion. Miley Cyrus, who penned a song for The Last Showgirl, and Ariana Grande, who is nominated for her work in Wicked, linked up during the ceremony. They were filmed chatting on the red carpet, joined by actress Sarah Paulson.
The stars are longtime friends whose relationships date back to their childhood, when they each acted on the Disney Channel and Nickelodeon, respectively. (Miley Cyrus famously took on the role of Hannah Montana on Disney, and Ariana Grande is best known for her role as Cat Valentine on the Nickelodeon show Victorious.) Both artists were nominated tonight, with Grande in the running for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role in any Motion Picture, and Cyrus nominated for Best Original Song – Motion Picture for her, Andrew Wyatt, and Lykke Zachrisson’s track for The Last Showgirl, “Beautiful That Way.”
Grande already had a special moment with another fellow pop star, Selena Gomez, during the awards season circuit. On December 10, they were seated next to each other at the Academy women’s luncheon in Los Angeles.
Grande and Gomez spoke to Variety about their relationship at the event. Grande said of Gomez, “I respect her so much, and I’ve always adored her. I was really happy for her to see us on that list [of Golden Globes nominees] together. It was very special.”
Gomez echoed the sentiment, telling the outlet, “Ariana texted me, and it was the sweetest note and it was about six in the morning. We sent each other voice messages. It was very exciting.”
Gomez and Cyrus also are good friends, as they both worked together in their Disney days. In August 2023, Gomez shared a message of support for Cyrus, as both artists announced singles coming out on the same day (Gomez’s “Single Soon” and Cyrus’s “Used to be Young”).
Gomez shared: “@mileycyrus and I both have a SINGLE SOON and we are releasing on the same day. We have been friends since we USED TO BE YOUNG. Excited for August 25th!”
The actress also first revealed her bipolar depression diagnosis on Cyrus’s COVID-19 pandemic Instagram Live show, Bright Minded. They reconnected over Instagram DMs leading up to Gomez’s April 2020 appearance on the show. During the broadcast, Gomez told Cyrus, “I think you’re one of the greatest singers ever. And I just was so happy that I even got this opportunity to talk to you about some of the most incredible people.”
