Karla Sofía Gascón—the actress behind the titular protagonist in Netflix’s genre-bending movie musical Emilia Pérez—stepped out at ELLE’s Women In Hollywood event, held in partnership with Ralph Lauren, Harry Winston, and TikTok. Dressed in a sequin floral column gown, she accessorized with black pumps and rings and wore her hair down in voluminous, loose curls.
She also posed with her co-stars and fellow honorees, Selena Gomez and Zoe Saldaña, on the red carpet.
With Emilia Pérez, Gascón’s first movie role since coming out as a trans woman, “The first thing I thought was that it was going to be a very complicated film,” she said in her ELLE cover story interview. “It didn’t have a defined genre and I really didn’t understand the complexity until we started the filming and editing process. The movie that I read in that first script is nothing like the movie that we filmed, is nothing like the movie that was edited; and is nothing like the movie that I saw that first time in Cannes.”
The film is indeed nearly impossible to categorize, but in spite of that fact—or perhaps because of it—Emilia Pérez has since become a frontrunner for the Oscars, putting Gascón in the industry conversation after she and her co-stars took home a collective Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival this year. When asked about performing with Gascón, Selena Gomez told ELLE, “With Karla, I’ve never been more challenged artistically. She has this strength about her in her performance and her dedication. It would just blow me away and I would feel a little intimidated.”
