Taylor Swift made one last outfit change before ending her night at the MTV VMAs and returning to New York City for an after-party at Electric Lady Studios. And it turns out the singer’s final look was very similar to her second dress. In fact, they were from the same designer: Monse. Both pieces featured a UFO pattern. Swift’s after-party set was the brand’s UFO Tapestry Boyfriend Jacket and Harness Tapestry Dress.
It seems Swift is doubling down on her “Down Bad” Easter egg and the symbolism behind her designer choice of Monse due to her lyrics acknowledging “cosmic love” and the fact that former First Lady Michelle Obama recently wore the label. For those who want to read into the names of the pieces as well, there may be a little nod to her partner, Travis Kelce, as well with that “boyfriend” jacket.
The Kansas City tight end couldn’t join his girlfriend at the VMAs, as he had to return to work. Still, Swift gave her boyfriend a shout-out in her Video of the Year speech for “Fortnight.”
She told the crowd, “Something that I’ll always remember is that when I would finish a take, and I’d say, ‘Cut,’ and we’d be done with that take, I would always just hear like someone like cheering and like [going], ‘Whoo!’ from across the studio where we were shooting it, and that one person was my boyfriend, Travis. Everything this man touches turns to happiness and fun and magic. So I want to thank him for adding that to our shoot, because I’ll always remember that.”
Swift didn’t announce any new projects at the VMAs, but some fans theorize she could be heavily hinting that “Down Bad” will be her next single from The Tortured Poets Department.
The UFOs on both of Swift’s Monse looks allude to the song’s opening lyrics: “Did you really beam me up? / In a cloud of sparkling dust / Just to do experiments on / Tell me I was the chosen one / Showed me that this world is bigger than us / Then sent me back where I came from / For a moment I knew cosmic love / Now I’m down bad, crying at the gym.”
Swift’s choice of Monse is also politically symbolic. As mentioned above, Obama wore the brand while giving her speech at the Democratic National Convention in August. Swift publicly endorsed Kamala Harris, the Democratic candidate for president, earlier this week.
During her final VMAs speech, Swift used her last words to encourage everyone to vote. She said, “If you are over 18, please register to vote for something else that’s very important: our presidential election. I love you guys so, so much. Thank you for this moment.” You can register to vote on vote.gov.
