Sabrina Carpenter is ending the biggest summer of her career at the 2024 MTV VMAs, and she came dressed to celebrate. The artist, who is up for seven awards, wore a vintage Bob Mackie gown that hugged her curves. She opted for very Marilyn Monroe-like glam, wearing her blonde hair in curls. She had on De Beers jewelry.

Carpenter is actually wearing the same Bob Mackie gown that Madonna wore to the 1991 Oscars. Her glam is very similar to Madonna’s as well:

Carpenter is up for Artist of the Year, Song of the Year (“Espresso”), Song of the Summer (“Please Please Please”), and Best Pop Artist. Her video for “Please Please Please” is nominated for Best Direction and Best Art Direction, while “Espresso” is up for Best Editing.

This is not Carpenter’s first time at the MTV VMAs. She was a pre-show performer last year, and wore a Vera Wang bustier dress with a sheer skirt on the red carpet.

This year, she’ll be performing during the main show.

Carpenter spoke to W magazine in an interview published last week about how she wrote “Espresso,” while in France. She had 10 days off after opening for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour.

“I was in a ghost town that had one little creperie down the road,” she recalled. “I had my shot of espresso, and then I might have had some champagne, and before I knew it the song was written. I definitely hear it now in every car I get into, and being on the radio, to me, is still—it’s like fate. You have to be at the right place at the right time.”

She also added that she isn’t really trying to make her love life a public conversation amid commentary about her and Keoghan’s relationship status. Her music can speak for her. “I get why people are interested,” she said. “But they can listen to my album and decide for themselves what the songs are about.”
