Selena Gomez’s big return to the MTV VMAs has come after eight years away. Gomez left for the ceremony in a stringy red floral dress by Oscar de la Renta to mark her three nominations with Rema for their collaboration “Calm Down.” She accessorized with Pasquale Bruni jewelry.

She teased her attendance on her Instagram Story before she made it to the carpet. Her makeup artist Hung Vanngo then showed a full video of her look:

While she just released the track “Single Soon,” Gomez doesn’t have any solo work up for awards at this year’s show. But she is still a nominated artist in some of the night’s biggest, most competitive categories with Rema. Their collaboration, “Calm Down,” is up for Song of the Year, Best Collaboration, and Best Afrobeats song.

Gomez was not photographed on the East Coast or near Newark or New York City ahead of the show, making her attendance tonight a true exciting surprise.

She shared photos of herself on Instagram the night before the VMAs, seemingly at home. One shot showed her in a bodysuit and Victoria’s Secret bra, because why not?

Gomez did tease more music is coming and that she has been working on an album. She told SiriusXM’s Tony Fly in late August that her next work is full of upbeat tracks.

“There’s not one sad song on my album,” she said. “And I don't mean that in a way, like, everything is not full of meaning because I think even the most poppy songs can have heart. And I want that to come across, but I genuinely don’t feel like I have anything in me to write something negative. It just doesn't match with where I am anymore. And I live in Sad Girl music world. I love that. And I’ll write that music all the time, but I, I just felt like this album shouldn't be that.” She has not shared a release date yet.
