If you’re dealing with rough, dull skin, there are plenty of products out there that promise to help. Sadly, the problem is that many of them are smoke and mirrors. There is one ingredient, however, that dermatologists and beauty experts agree is a miracle worker for skin: vitamin A. Vitamin A, better known as retinol, can truly level up your skin care routine. Not only does it work to slough off dead skin cells and brighten skin, but it also improves the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

“Retinol increases skin cell turnover to improve skin texture and unclog pores, even tone and discoloration, and address the appearance of fine lines,” says Dr. Sara Hogan, MD, assistant clinical professor of dermatology at The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences.

Is a vitamin A serum different from retinol?

shape, rectangle

Vitamin A and retinol are essentially interchangeable. “Retinol is a vitamin A derivative that is an ingredient in skin care creams, lotions, and serums,” says Dr. Hogan. “When applied, retinols are converted in the skin through a two-step process into retinoic acid, which is the same as retinoids. Retinoids, which are also Vitamin A derivatives, are much stronger and work faster than retinol, but can be more irritating, and are available as a prescription.”

What should someone look for in a vitamin A serum?

shape, rectangle

Dr. Hogan explains that the amount of vitamin A in a serum is an important consideration. “Over-the-counter Vitamin A serums range in strength from 0.01 percent to 1 percent,” she says. “If someone has sensitive skin, eczema, or rosacea, select a serum with a lower retinol concentration or one with a formulation that contains moisturizing ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid. Acne-prone skin and mature skin may do better with higher retinol concentrations.”

What’s the best way to apply a vitamin A serum?

shape, rectangle

First of all, always make sure that your skin is clean and dry before applying vitamin A. For retinol, you only need a small amount for it to be effective. “Avoid application too close to the eye, around the nose and mouth, as these areas can easily become irritated,” says Dr. Hogan. “Start only a few nights a week, then slowly increase to every other night, then nightly as tolerated. If redness, flaking, or irritation develops, hold the Vitamin A serum until these symptoms resolve. Layer with a moisturizer to decrease the risk of irritation.”
